Coronavirus Diary

Today is Wednesday, January 5, 2022. Today the nation heard a sober, solemn speech from Attorney General Merrick Garland who spoke about the shameful events of January 6. This story was covered in an online Business Insider article by C. Ryan Barber and Sonam Sheth. The attorney general hit all the high notes as to how the Justice Department would be gathering evidence to hold those responsible for the insurrection, which could possibly lead to prosecuting the former president and his rogue bunch of allies for committing sedition against the United States. Without naming the former president, Garland said that the Justice Department “remains committed to holding all January 6th perpetrators, at any level, accountable under law – whether they were present that day or were otherwise criminally responsible for the assault on our democracy.”

For months, the attorney general has faced mounting criticism that his department has only prosecuted the minor assailants against the Capitol – the members of the unruly mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6 – but has not targeted Dumpf or other participants, possibly even other congressmen. He further added, “We will follow the facts wherever they lead.”

Garland delivered about 30 minutes of remarks from the Department of Justice (DOJ’s) main headquarters in Washington, D.C., speaking in front of of a live audience that included FBI Director Chris Wray and several top department deputies. Garland also urged Americans to be patient with respect to who will be held accountable for the riots at the U.S. Capitol that a year ago interrupted the official congressional certification of Joe Biden’s win over his opponent.

Some experts lauded the speech, while some others criticized the address for not saying enough. Joyce Vance, a former U.S. attorney in the Obama administration, said, “This is the speech he needed to give.” She further added, “In the restrained language prosecutors use, he’s committed to follow the evidence wherever it leads. That’s what we want – not a promise to prosecute, a promise to follow the evidence and the law.”

Those who had criticism for Garland’s speech could be found on social media as they voiced their frustration over what’s taking Garland DOJ so long to get to the bottom of the Capitol attack. “A former Justice Department official who requested anonymity to speak candidly disagreed with others who say that Garland struck the perfect tone.”

Another critic of the attorney general, Rep. Ruben Gallego, an Arizona Democrat, said on CNN several hours before Garland’s speech, “I think Merrick Garland has been extremely weak, and I think there should be a lot more of the organizers of Jan. 6 that should be arrested by now.”

Garland delivered his remarks on the eve of the January 6th riot. Tomorrow the country will mark the one-year anniversary of this ignominious event. Our duly elected president will be giving a speech to commemorate the date. I hope that this commander-in-chief will give a most forceful address laying out the truth behind the attack and condemning the person most responsible for it: Donald J. Trump. There can be no dodging and aversions here in this regard. Biden must speak to the truth of what really happened. I wish that Biden will now name the traitor by name, not avoid uttering it. We will see tomorrow when the speech is delivered by a president whose popularity has nosedived since taking office about a year ago.

Let’s hope there is no more funny business tomorrow on the one-year anniversary from far-right groups. I’m elated that the Orange Menace might stay quiet throughout the day. He would be a fool if he ever decided to release a statement. Nothing he says ever contains a scintilla of truth – ever.

Tomorrow should be an interesting day.

Stay safe and be well.
