Today is Sunday, March 27, 2022. It’s Oscar night; is anyone watching? I haven’t watched a full Academy Awards show for over three decades or so. As one of Elliot’s former friends used to say who worked for Warner Brothers Pictures, it’s the night that Hollywood pats itself on the back. He actually was more profane than that, but I cleaned up the original quote. But you get the idea! As we all know, many deserving actors have been snubbed by the Oscars; an article in today’s Parade magazine in the Daily News has an article on all of those artists who have not won an Academy Award and the list is rather long. Actors like the venerable Cary Grant, Glenn Close (who’s had eight Oscar nominations and have not won one), Judy Garland, the late Peter O’Toole (who also was nominated eight times but came up short), and Charlie Chaplin, plus many, many more; directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick who have never won. The list goes on and on. So if you’re watching, I hope you enjoy this endless show.
A more controversial feature of this year’s awards show is the ultimatum delivered by actor Sean Penn who has gone on record saying he will “smelt his Oscars in public if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is not invited to speak at the Academy Awards. Penn commented to CNN’s Jim Acosta that the Oscars must have the Ukrainian leader address the program – otherwise, viewers and guests should boycott the ceremony. Since I have sneaked in a peek of the awards show before 9, this has not happened, so maybe Zelensky did speak at the awards show. I really don’t know since the ceremony is still in its second hour. I’ll find out sometime tomorrow, I’m sure.
In the real world, repugnicans continue their relentless attack against American principles, as we have the twice-impeached, disgraced former president holding court in Georgia before a crowd of MAGA hats and numbskulls. In an online RawStory article, the rally is covered in which the delusional old man lied about the size of the crowd that came out to pay him homage. Sarah K. Burns writes the article entitled ‘They’ve never had a crowd this big in this big area of big crowds’: Trump on his anemic Georgia rally size.” So as the title of the article conveys, the disgraced dictator-in-chief is resorting to making up crowd sizes for the public – once more – in order to not admit the dismal truth: no one wants to see him anymore. During Dumpf’s 2107 inauguration, this was the first time his administration lied about the size of the crowd that came out to watch the proceedings. From that time on, the tenor of the Dumpf administration took on its delusional shape. It all went downhill from there.
Dumpf made his ludicrous comments about the size of his Georgia audience to Newsmax, a conservative news outlet, in which he gushed about the “bigness” of the crowd in the seats. He explained that it was “record breaking.”
To counter the delusions of the former president, Greg Bluestein, a political reporter at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweeted, “I’ve covered more than two dozen Trump rallies around the nation. This is the smallest crowd I’ve seen at a rally of his in Georgia since he won the 2016 election – significantly smaller than the crowd in Perry in September.”
Dumpf’s office claimed that there were 25,00 to 30,000 attendees, which Bluestein also debunked. So there you have it: a perfectly superfluous rally held by a bum who only craves to be in the public eye, no matter what the cost!
Referring to the ongoing controversy surrounding the MAGA wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) hinted today that the House Select Committee investigating January 6 may ask for testimony from Ginni Thomas, the wife of the conservative jurist, because of her alleged texts sent to then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows asking about the overthrow of the 2020 presidential election. This development was covered in an online article for RawStory by David Edwards titled “Adam Kinzinger hints at Ginni Thomas subpoena: ‘We’ll call in whoever we need to call in.'”
During an interview with guest host John Dickerson on Face the Nation, Kinzinger was asked about reports that the committee has seditious text messages exchanged by Thomas and Meadows. Coyly responding, Kinzinger said he could not confirm or deny the existence of the emails, but he did say, “We’ll call in whoever we need to call in.”
Throughout the interview, Kinzinger talked about the mission of the committee, which is to understand if there was an effort to overturn the legitimate election of the United States in 2020 and to get at “the rot in our system that led to that and does it still exist today.” Dickerson wondered if the “rot in the system” that Kinzinger was referring to reaches as high as the Supreme Court. Answering succinctly, Kinzinger replied, “I’m not going to say that.” He went on to say that the committee is going to present its case to the American people and to present the truth as it is constituted. Kinzinger reiterated that the committee will tell the American people where they have been lied to and where there are bad actors out there. He concludes, “That kind of stuff is very important so in five or ten years when kids are reading in the history books about January 6, they’re not buying into any of these conspiracy theories, they’re getting the truth.” Amen!
Hell, this crazy blonde wife of the jurist whom most liberal Americans hate should be subpoenaed, no doubt about it. No one is above the law here – not even conspiracy theorist wives of Supreme Court justices.
So today was a rare uneventful day, given that the weather evoked days in February with the chill in the air and the wind in the trees. This was not a day to take a long walk somewhere. Earlier Elliot and I drove to Jackson Hole for breakfast and then we got gas at a Mobil gas station. The price: $4.59 for a gallon of gas.
Elliot preferred to stay home, while I went out to the gym and to do some shopping at the Natural. Actually, as I was walking to the gym, it seemed as if it were flurrying outside. That’s how cold it was today.
We have two days off from our kitchen remodeling project, as our contractor is away down in Silver Spring, Maryland, visiting with his daughter. So we can sleep late tomorrow and Tuesday. Aside: I actually told Elliot before dinner that, in a way, I wished that “Cameron” were not taking off the next two days, so that more work could be completed in the kitchen.
So have a good week. So far, it’s not going to be a warm week, according to my extended weather forecast on my phone. Where is the warm weather already?
Stay safe and be well.
