Coronavirus Diary

Today is Wednesday, March 30, 2022. The current debate surrounding the judicial ethics of Justice Clarence Thomas seems to be shaping up as a midterm election issue, according to an online article in The Hill today written by John Kruzel in which the issue is analyzed from how both sides view the present kerfuffle. The piece is titled “Political battle lines form on Clarence Thomas.”

On the Democratic side, Thomas is facing growing calls to recuse himself from any Supreme Court cases that are connected to the January 6 riot at the Capitol since the revelation that his wife, Ginni Thomas, sought to overturn the former president’s election defeat. Some Democrats even, such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez (D-NY), have called for Thomas to either resign or face impeachment.

On the other hand, repugnicans find nothing distasteful about the recent news concerning Thomas’s possible breach of partiality in Supreme Court cases arising out of the January 6th siege at the Capitol, which probably some repugnicans fomented themselves, and accuse Democrats are seeking to unseat a conservative jurist because they do not like his legal opinions. What nonsense, if you ask me! The GOP is certainly not a party of ethics anymore, given their obsessive allegiance to a wanna-be dictator. Thomas is well respected, along with his batshit wife, in the conservative movement, as if you didn’t know already.

“Both sides are likely to see Thomas as a figure who can be used to raise money and rally voters to the ballot box as Democrats defend slim majorities in the House and Senate, and Republicans look to take over.”

Marcela Mulholland, political director at the progressive policy and polling organization, Data for Progress, views the Thomas imbroglio as a messaging opportunity for Democrats. She opined, “To the extent the Democrats can make this a story about Republican corruption on the Supreme Court, in Congress, with the former president, being part of their broader effort to strip people of healthcare, of reproductive rights, of other issues that are really popular among the electorate, I think it can benefit Democrats at the ballot box.” Let’s hope these issues do fire up the Democratic electorate to come out and vote for the only party that is viable right now.

Scrutiny of Clarence Thomas, 73, ramped up in the wake of explosive reports last week about his wife’s texts to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. The revelations raised fresh questions about the justice’s refusal to step aside from at least 10 cases related to the 2020 election that came before the Supreme Court.

Among them was an 8-1 ruling where Thomas was the only justice to side with Dumpf’s request to block House investigators probing the January 6, 2021, insurrection from obtaining his White House records. To me, this is a little too coincidental that Thomas is the only justice to side with the former insurrectionist to irrationally block the release of his presidential records from the eyes of the January 6 panel. His wife described the legitimate win by Joe Biden as president as an “obvious fraud” and “the greatest heist of our history.” Do you think this wife of a Supreme Court jurist is rational here? Maybe in her QAnon-addled mind, she believed herself to be sane but not to those in the real world who would consider herself acting quite irrationally.

Slamming Thomas for his obvious breach of ethics here, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter yesterday, “Clarence Thomas should resign.” She adds, “If not, his failure to disclose income from right-wing organizations, recuse himself from matters involving his wife, and his vote to block the Jan. 6th commission from key information must be investigated and could serve as grounds for impeachment.” Another fellow progressive House member, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), also pressed for Thomas’s impeachment within hours of reports of Ginni Thomas’s text messages with Meadows surfacing last Thursday.

Mulholland said that the Thomas scandal could make an especially potent midterm issue if the conservative 6-3 majority court undermines or overrules Roe v. Wade this summer, as many court watchers expect it will do. The political director at Data for Progress believes the overturning of the right to an abortion could be the historical event that can mobilize turnout among women and Democrats.

To give the other side its due, GOP strategist Doug Heye said voter intensity on the issue for judges has only favored repugnicans, and he noted that the court overturning Roe could have the effect of energizing GOP voters too. Let’s hope this guy’s predictions are fucking wrong when it comes to the midterms.

As if the former narcissistic and monstrously selfish former president couldn’t sink any lower, he has in yesterday’s published interview in which it was revealed how he brazenly asked his pal, Vladimir Putin, to release any damaging information he has about the Biden family as if he were still running for president. This request was sickeningly made by Dumpf in the middle of a war in Ukraine where women and children are being slaughtered, and it just illustrates his delusional and self-obsessed nature. I propose that if Dumpf is interested in finding out some “dirt” on the Bidens, why doesn’t he fly to Russia on a private jet to ask his compadre to supply him with the information in person?

The disgusting clip of Dumpf asking Putin for help was published by a news website founded by John Solomon, a pro-Trump journalist whose previous coverage about the Bidens’ ties to Ukraine has been discredited. He told CNN that the interview was taped on Monday at Mar-a-Largo.

I contend that if this subhuman had any shred of humanity in him, he would have been imploring Putin to stop this devastating war rather than asking for a fucking favor. I can’t believe this would look good for him at this moment in time. It’s just mind boggling.

That’s it for me today. I hope to be here tomorrow, even though we have reconnoitered with Elliot’s cousins who arrived from Texas sometime close to 5. They were expected a little after 4, but their flight was delayed. We drove them to their hotel, the Hampton Inn, close to LaGuardia Airport, and took them to dinner at the Riviera Restaurant, on Utopia Parkway. We then drove them to see where “Peter’s” father had a candy store decades ago on Fresh Meadow Lane. Then we drove them back to their hotel room since it was late already.

Stay safe and be well.
