Coronavirus Diary

Today is Friday, April 1, 2022. Federal criminal investigators have expanded the January 6 investigation to gather information about fundraising and organizing for the political rally held immediately before Dumpf supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, as well as the effort to subvert the Electoral College vote count, multiple sources tell CNN. CNN has an online article on this new development in the continuing probe into the events of January 6. The article was written by Katelyn Polantz, Zachary Cohen, Paula Reid, and Whitney Wild entitled “Federal prosecutors expand criminal probe into January 6, examining rally planning and fake electors.”

Evidence of this expansion include subpoenas that have been issued by a grand jury in Washington in recent weeks, seeking information on the rally and on the alternate slates of fake electors for former demagogue Dumpf in swing states he lost, sources said, marking a significant development in the probe. Until recently, prosecutors were almost exclusively bringing cases against alleged rioters and some members of extremist groups accused of conspiring to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

One of the sources said the inquiry appeared to be examining “a higher level of rally planning,” including who was communicating with whom. There were multiple rallies before the Capitol siege on January 6, and the federal investigators appear to be asking about the one at which Dumpf talked.

The expansion of the Justice Department’s already sprawling criminal probe comes as Attorney General Merrick Garland has come under increasing political pressure to examine possible wrongdoing by people in Dumpf’s orbit. Even though Garland has earlier mentioned this month that the department does “not shy away from cases that are controversial or sensitive or political,” he has declined to answer specific questions about the investigation.

The investigation into January 6 is the largest ever conducted by the Justice Department, with nearly 800 people charged for allegedly taking part in the Capitol insurrection.

Maybe with this expansion into the widespread criminality associated with the events of January 6, the nation might just see some form of accountability on the part of higher-ups who conspired to overturn a legitimate election for no good reason other than to help keep a wanna-be dictator in power.

On a lighter note, the revelation that former demagogue Donald Dumpf never heard of a burner phone in his absurd defense against ever using one during that mysterious seven-hour gap in White House phone record logs was ridiculed by late-night host Seth Meyers on his Late Night program on Thursday night. The host poked fun at the former president’s defense. Mocking the ex-president’s acknowledgment that “To the best of my knowledge, I have never even heard of the term.” Meyers joked, “First of all, I’m not willing to put any faith in the best of your knowledge.” The late night host remarked that the “best of your knowledge doesn’t even include the name of the CEO of Apple.”

At this point, the host played a clip from when Apple CEO Tim Cook visited the White House, and Dumpf called him “Tim Apple.” Meyers then shreds Dumpf’s claims of not ever using a burner phone. He says, “I love that he claims not just that he’s never used one, but he’s never heard the term. Dude, you worked in real estate for decades. I’m betting every phone Trump used was a burner phone.”

Here Meyers suggests that Dumpf would have convinced more people of his alleged veracity if he had said instead, ‘I’ve never used a burner phone,’ rather than deny categorically that he’s never even heard of the term. Meyers then offers this analogy about parents going through a child’s sock drawer and finding some pot in the son’s sock drawer and a son’s guileless response is, ‘What the hell’s a sock? And you keep them in drawers, you say. This is all news to me, I’m an innocent man, I tell you!'” If Dumpf had just said ‘I’ve never used a burner phone,'” that would be harder to disprove. As I have already written, Dumpf’s own former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, disproved his weak claim of having no knowledge of what a burner phone was.

I don’t have time to write about Republican congressman Madison Cawthorn’s ridiculous assertions of other lawmakers using drugs and his receiving invitations to partake in orgies. The North Carolina congressman has alleged in an interview that “sexual perversion” was rampant in Congress. This kind of behavior by one of his own finally sparked outrage from the House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy who had a deep discussion with the disabled Dumpf loyalist, saying that the congressman had “lost” his trust. Only these kinds of comments have resulted in getting the dander up of the cowardly McCarthy who has generally said nothing about other Congress members’ outrageous comments and behavior.

Today was a very busy day spent with Elliot’s Texas cousins. We were on the go from 11 a.m. until about 9 tonight. We had a lovely day transporting “Perry” and “Alice” to the Lower East Side, where Elliot drove by early childhood points of interest. We then had an early lunch at the Ukrainian restaurant, Veselka, on 2nd Avenue. We were amazed over how jammed the restaurant was at this time. We then drove Alice to the Broadway area where she bought some mementoes in a souvenir shop near Times Square. We then drove back to Queens where we had dinner at a local Chinese restaurant on Queens Boulevard. We then drove Perry and Alice back to their hotel near LaGuardia Airport.

Have a good weekend.

Stay safe and be well.

These posters were on the wall at Veselka Restaurant.
