Today is Friday, May 27, 2022. The most infuriating press conference ever to take place in American history just occurred in Uvalde, Texas, the site of the second-worst mass shooting at a public school in the United States. At this enraging press conference, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw stunningly revealed that there were 19 officers in the school hallway for about an hour even as children used their deceased teacher’s phone to dial 911 and begged for their lives. This stunning news is covered in an online article in The Bulwark written by Tim Miller entitled “In Uvalde, the Most Enraging Press Conference in American History.” McCraw described to grieving family members and other shocked audience members that police officials were preventing border patrol and other federal law enforcement officials from entering the besieged classrooms to help those terrorized children, mostly 10- and 11-year-olds, while their agonized parents were begging them to act from the outside. Earlier, it was reported that the school resource officer was not on the scene, which was originally thought to be the case. What the hell is going on here with so many missteps made by authorities supposedly in charge of the situation? Parents are rightfully outraged by these horrible revelations made only three days after the tragedy.
After admitting this staggering level of incompetence in the face of unimaginable evil, McCraw actually said dismissively, “If I thought it would help, I’d apologize.” The incompetent boob didn’t even attempt to apologize then for this glaring lapse in judgment on the part of Texas law enforcement authorities. McCraw made another admission that should send those cowardly bastards in our corridors of power to try to come up with sensible gun control laws. He said that there was “a barrage – hundreds of rounds were pumped in four minutes into those classrooms.”
In the coming days, we will unfortunately obsess over the details of the failed police response which could have saved lives if officers had stormed into the school without waiting for an hour, but we must not lose track of this salient fact: an 18-year-old should not have had access to two assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of bullets so that he could massacre a dozen innocents in the blink of an eye. If this were the case in Texas, this wouldn’t have happened as it did. This atrocious governor in the Lone Star State must be replaced in the upcoming election. He is ultimately responsible for this botched rescue attempt. He must pay with being retired. There should also be an extensive impartial investigation into this amazing lack of competence on the part of Texas law enforcement.
Miller ends the article with this commonsense recommendation to prevent the next school shooting: “The only way to actually protect these kids is to make it harder for their peers to get the deadly weapons that have allowed so many shooters to evade so many cops and so many safety procedures.”
Today also marked the first day of the terrible NRA conference in Houston. I’m comforted with knowing that thousands of decent Americans protested this unholy assemblage of gun lovers outside the convention center. The bastard governor Abbott bowed to political pressure not to attend, but the asshole still addressed the gun zealots via Jumbotron. What demented message does this send? The guy is still exhibiting his devotion to those assembled inside the stadium. If he had any humanity, he would have not shown, period! Another reason to get him out of office.
Those protesters outside the arena shouted, “NRA, go away,” and “Shame, it could be your kids today.” Watching MSNBC tonight with Ayman Moheyeldin, I saw children wearing signs around their necks with signs asking, “Am I next?” They also bore the names of the 19 children killed on Tuesday at Robb Elementary School. What is wrong with our society in this moment if we need babies to point out the inevitability of being massacred by just going to school these days?
This sad convention was covered in an online article from Reuters by Arathy Somasekhar entitled “Protests at NRA convention in Texas, but speakers reject new gun law.”
Demonstrators came with their placards outside the George R. Brown Convention Center to shame the people going inside the convention center. “Video of the main auditorium in Houston, which holds about 3,600 people, showed it be about half-full (still too many people, in my opinion) as former president Donald Trump took the stage late Friday afternoon.” Did he waddle onto the stage, as expected?
Speaker after speaker showed their hostility toward embracing background checks or bans on semiautomatic weapons. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, a MAGA Republican, urged attendees not to back down in their fight against gun control. The mad woman said, “Now would be the worst time to quit. Now is when we double down,” to loud cheers in the auditorium.
Shameless Ted “Ooze,” who would not cancel his appearance here, asked – can you believe this fucker? – for more weapons in communities. This is the same fucking Republican trope that says more guns are needed to combat the bad guys. “Put guns into the hands of the good guys,” they scream. This is certainly not the answer, as anyone really knows. This is what the pathetic Cruz said at the convention, “Taking away guns will not make them safer.” More guns, this prick should know, equal more violence, not less. Cruz must belong to those type of emasculated men that feel more masculine by having a gun in the house.
One of those protesters at the scene, Harper Young, a 15-year-old Houston student, held a poster and choked back tears. “It’s completely unacceptable that gun violence is happening again and again. It’s horrific.”
Rejecting the repugnican idea of arming teachers with guns to thwart the next shooting, Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, said how ridiculous such a notion really is. She noted, “More guns equal more violence. Assault weapons should be banned.”
Houston activist Johnny Mata called on the NRA to halt the convention (which they didn’t do, obviously) and hold a memorial service for the Uvalde victims. “They have the audacity not to cancel in respect of these families,” said Mata, who represented advocacy group Greater Houston Coalition for Justice. The NRA should “quit being a part of the assassination of children in American schools,” he angrily stated.
Representing the sick mindset of the attendees at the convention, Tim Hickey, a Marine Corps veteran, dismissed the protests, saying, “These people are puppets and sheep to the media (what an asshole idea!) They are not changing anyone’s mind,” he said. Maybe this time they are, Mr. Gun Enthusiast.
The disgusting governor said in his Jumbotron message, “laws will not stop evil madmen from committing these atrocities.” So this is the rationale for this idiot to not even try to call for new legislation determined to stop the next atrocity. That’s why we have no sensible gun control laws because of people like Abbott. Damn them all!
One thing you should know of the former president’s appearance at the NRA convention is that he did a little dance at the end of his speech. Why isn’t this guy in jail yet? that’s all I can say, after his offensive speech to the jerks in the room. Unfortunately, for them, the speech wasn’t offensive. To the rest of us, it certainly was!
Over this Memorial Day weekend, let’s reflect on all of those innocent victims who were tragically killed in 28 school shootings this year. Let’s make a concerted effort to change things for the first time in our history.
Stay safe and be well.
