Coronavirus Diary

Today is Tuesday, May 31, 2022, the last day of the month. Today the former demagogue was given yet another loss in court as his special counsel John Durham failed to prove that Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about turning over information that they discovered. Durham has spent three wasted years supposedly trying to indict Clinton’s campaign of showing Dumpf’s obvious connections to Russia. Today, after seven hours of deliberation, the unswayed jury concluded that Sussmann was innocent of lying to the FBI over the information that was turned over to the agency.

The stunning verdict was covered in an online article for salon by Sarah Burris entitled “‘You all look like idiots now'”: Legal experts mock Trump after John Durham’s ‘big fat loss’ in court.”

After the verdict, legal experts mocked repugnicans who swore that Durham would reestablish Dumpf’s credibility when it came to any accusation involving Russia. That effort has failed, miserably. In the meantime, “Durham spent $2.36 million in tax-payer dollars over the course of three years, doing nothing but make wild accusations in court filing documents, according to Sussmann’s lawyer.”

In a statement made from another lawyer familiar with the case, Sean Berkowitz, it was stated that “Michael Sussmann should never have been charged in the first place. This is a case of extraordinary prosecutorial overreach. And we believe that today’s verdict sends an unmistakable message to anyone who cares to listen: politics is no substitute for evidence, and politics has no place in our system of justice.” And we all know that the former president is the champion of unnecessary, politically motivated lawsuits that have all been decided in his disfavor all throughout 2020 and 2021.

One Twitter user, Bradley P. Moss, Esq., wrote this after the verdict was handed down, giving Trumpworld yet another defeat: “Remember when Sussmann was indicted, all the MAGA pundits were laughing about how the beginning of a conspiracy charge against Hillary was clearly in the works?

Don’t you all look like idiots now.” The rest of us must wonder if indeed they do look like idiots now.

The verdict today did not sit too well with conservatives behind the vilest man in politics today: Donald J. Dumpf. Instead of accepting the judgment of an impartial jury, these disgusting protofascists were scrambling to try to explain why Dumpf’s special counsel John Durham failed to prove his case. The dissembling from this ragged group of fabulists was covered in an online article for RawStory by Ray Hartmann entitled “Stunned conservatives left fuming after Trump’s special counsel fails to convict Michael Sussmann.”

So in the wake of the not-guilty verdict, such far-right outlets like Fox News and other likeminded print media were caught with their jaws on the floor. The one thing to do then in this case was to blame the “DC jury” that rendered the verdict. Gregg Jarret from Fox News had the temerity to say that the scales of justice were weighted against Republicans, but “if you’re a Democrat, it’s in your great favor.” Isn’t this the worst bullshit you’ve ever heard?

Another conservative critic of the acquittal, Byron York from the Washington Examiner, said this about the case: “There is no doubt Sussmann lied to the FBI. There is no doubt he is guilty. But the trial is taking place in Washington, perhaps the deepest-blue jury pool in the United States.” The implications from this chief national correspondent are quite ominous: that if the trial took place in a red state like Kentucky, the outcome would have been different. But would it have been? Also who gave this man the omniscience to know that Sussmann was indeed guilty of the charges leveled against him. I think this is despicable, but given that these are far-right extremists, nothing is shocking about their behavior anymore.

Here this gun-obsessed country could learn a lesson from our neighbors to the north, Canada, where Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just called for a national freeze on handgun sales today. “The fewer the guns in our communities, the safer we will all be,” Trudeau stated in an address to Parliament. Heck, so true! This proposal came about as a result of the Uvalde, Texas, tragedy in this country. He said there is no need for assault-style weapons in the country, which are designed to kill the most people in the shortest time frame. Maybe we should all emigrate to Canada after this legislation is passed.

An online article appearing in Vanity Fair could offer some relief to the millions of fed-up Americans who wish that the former president would finally get his comeuppance over the myriad transgressions he’s committed throughout his long criminal life. The article was written by Bess Levin and is entitled “Donald Trump Seems Pretty Panicky About That Criminal Investigation in Georgia!”

Here the writer sums up the smarmy ex-president accurately in the opening paragraph: “Donald Trump has a long, robust history of getting away with every shady, underhanded, wildly unethical, likely criminal thing he’s ever done in his life.” She then notes how he’s stiffed contractors he owes money to, how he’s paid off a porn star to keep quiet about their alleged affair, or even incited a riot in a failed attempt to overturn the results of an election he lost. Where is his comeuppance? everyone wonders. According to a federal prosecutor, however, Dumpf’s luck might be running out, thanks to the state of Georgia.

Our friend at MSNBC, former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, Joyce Vance, told MSNBC that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who empaneled a special grand jury earlier this year, has wildly damning evidence on her hands regarding Dumpf’s attempt to steal the 2020 Georgia vote. The district attorney has that infamous phone call in which Dumpf ordered Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger to “find” him the exact number of votes necessary to win the state, despite the fact that he actually had lost. Remember this lout told Raffensberger “I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have, because we won the state.” Before ending the call, Dumpf threatened to prosecute the local official for failing to follow through if his demands were not met. At the time, the then-president did not ask for an investigation into potential voting fraud, nor did he ask for a look to see whether something went wrong, but instead asked the secretary of state to find the number of votes that he needs in order to win the state.

As would be expected from someone who has been caught with his hand in the cookie jar, Dumpf went on a typical rant on his ironic-sounding social media platform “Truth Social,” where he described the prosecutor from Georgia as a “Radical, Left Democrat presiding over one of the most Crime Ridden and Corrupt places in the USA, Fulton County.” What is with this jerk and those capitals? And he had the balls to call the aforementioned call a “PERFECT” phone call. He then deflects his own guilt in this sorry affair by saying he was robbed of a fair election that was rigged and stolen from him. Aren’t we all sick of this guy fulminating like he still matters that much anymore? Maybe this online article might give us some measure of hope in that we might be privy to an indictment of the ex-president coming out of Georgia sometime in the near future. Time will tell!

Stay safe and be well.
