Coronavirus Diary

Today is Friday, June 3, 2022. Finally, the Justice Department is getting tough with allies to the former demagogue when it handed down an indictment against former Dumpf trade adviser Peter Navarro on two counts of contempt with failure to comply with a subpoena issued by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 siege of the U.S. Capitol, according to an announcement by the Department of Justice (DOJ) today. Peter K. Navarro, 72, was officially charged with a misdemeanor count involving his refusal to appear for a deposition and another involving his refusal to produce documents, despite a subpoena from the investigative panel, according to the DOJ. This new development in the story behind Dumpf’s slow-moving coup was covered in an online article for HeySocal entitled “Ex-UCI professor and Trump advisor Peter Navarro indicted.”

The defiant trade adviser to the former dictator-to-be has always maintained an arrogant mien on MSNBC in interviews with Ari Melber on his program; in fact, I was privy to his last interview with the tanned commentator just last night when the Dumpf ally parried with the commentator over his refusal to cooperate with the January 6 committee. Melber resorted to interrupting Navarro when he began fulminating and made no sense at all; it was really embarrassing on this guy’s part. Also, Melber made the salient point that why was Navarro taking his case public on MSNBC, but still refusing to speak with members of the investigative committee. At times, both interlocutors were talking over each other; Navarro outshone himself in his arrogance and his nonsensical gibberish in trying to justify his wild actions with regard to revealing the truth of Dumpf’s failed attempt to overturn the 2020 election. The indictment was returned Thursday and unsealed today. Navarro made his initial appearance Friday afternoon in federal court in the District of Columbia.

As would be expected of these whiners on the far right, Navarro blasted federal authorities for arresting him and placing him in a jail cell instead of merely summoning him to court. Oh, Peter, how terrible it must for you to be treated like the common criminal you really are! If you had complied with a federal subpoena, you would have not been treated thusly. You have nobody’s sympathy here at all!

I won’t reprint what the angry old man said upon being hauled into court. I wish this were the case for all of Dumpf’s henchmen who aided and abetted him in his shocking attempt to subvert the 2020 election in order to maintain absolute power. All I can say about this course of events is that if any one of us had received such a summons, we would have been dragged into court if we ever decided to refuse to comply with the dictates of a subpoena. So Navarro should go to hell for doing what he did!

In its subpoena, the committee said it had reason to believe that Navarro had information relevant to its investigation. Navarro has been a private citizen since departing the White House on January 20, 2021.

Each count of contempt carries a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of one year in jail, as well as a fine of up to $100,000, prosecutors noted. Let him get the maximum!

Navarro has no ally in Dumpf’s onetime personal attorney Michael Cohen who has seen the light since serving a prison sentence for a scheme to help fix hush payments for his former boss. Today Cohen said that Navarro was making a terrible mistake for his defiance against the January 6 committee’s subpoena. He acknowledged that Navarro will go to jail for it. Cohen admitted this to Ari Melber on his program The Beat today. This story was covered in an online RawStory article by Matthew Chapman entitled “Michael Cohen: Peter Navarro has made a terrible mistake – and will go to prison for it.”

Cohen openly declared to Melber that “Peter Navarro is making a terrible mistake. He’ll end up in prison. He’s foolish. One quarter of his life could be in prison. If you’re watching, I hope you are, you don’t want to go there. It’s terrible. Removed from your family and friends. They destroy your name, your reputation. All for who? All for what? For Donald Trump? For democracy?” What makes someone like Navarro jeopardize his reputation and freedom for a scumbag like Dumpf who would unhesitatingly throw him under the bus in a heartbeat in order to escape the same fucking fate? This is so unfathomable! Maybe Navarro will soon learn his lesson while sitting in a prison cell. Cohen says that Navarro is a fool for going on a rant against federal authorities for picking him up at the airport rather than just politely nudging him to come to headquarters to sit for a courteous conversation. Boy, this Navarro is a fucking asshole, not a fool.

In connection with the Navarro contempt charges, it was revealed today by The New York Times that the DOJ has decided against charging former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former Dumpf social media director Dan Scavino with contempt of Congress.

The reason for not charging these two individuals with contempt appears to be that both have cooperated with the investigation to a greater degree than other Dumpf allies who were charged with contempt, chiefly former strategists Steve Bannon and, now, Peter Navarro.

It was reported that both Mr. Meadows and Mr. Scavino engaged in weeks of negotiations with the committee’s lawyers, and that Mr. Meadows turned over more than 9,000 documents to the panel, before the House voted to charge them with contempt. It was not the case with Bannon and Navarro who fought the committee’s subpoenas from Day 1 and never entered into negotiations with the committee.

Today marked National Gun Violence Awareness Day and, because of the outrage and media attention over the latest mass shooting atrocities, it should not be too difficult for everyone to wear orange to demand a future free from gun violence once and for all. I Googled why people wear orange on this day and also this weekend, which is Wear Orange Weekend, and I received this explanation. As expected, it’s quite tragic and should make everyone angry over the shattering number of people who are killed with guns for no sane reason.

The background then for wearing this color stems from January 31, 2013, where Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. Soon after this senseless loss of life, Hadiya’s friends commemorated her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. This observation is now marked in June. Thousands of people wear the color orange to honor Hadiya and the more than 40,000 people who are killed with guns and approximately 85,000 who are shot and wounded every year. (This summation of the commemoration came from Wear Orange’s website.)

So in solidarity with the sober message behind the organization, I did wear orange today: an orange short-sleeved shirt, orange shorts, and orange sneakers. Is this enough orange for you? I will try to wear the same outfit this entire weekend. I hope that you will join me in this worthy crusade.

So have a great orange-hued weekend.

Stay safe and be well.
