Coronavirus Diary

Today is Wednesday 22, 2022. Today The Washington Post online reported that the January 6 hearings are having the desired effect of greasing the slow wheels of justice in that federal agents issued new subpoenas regarding the January 6 riot at the Capitol and raided the homes of two people involved in the plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The article was written by Eric Garcia and Andrew Feinberg entitled “FBI raids homes and new subpoenas issued as January 6 committee pushes back hearings over fresh evidence.”

The Post received confirmation by the FBI that it conducted authorized law enforcement activity at the home of Brad Carver, who allegedly signed a document to be a Trump elector, as well as Thomas Lane, who worked on Dumpf’s effort to overturn the election in Arizona and New Mexico.

Other would-be participants in former president Dumpf’s scheme to send an alternate slate of electors to subvert the 2020 election received subpoenas. These summonses and activity at the homes of these two alleged election conspirators come just a day after Arizona state Speaker of the House Russell “Rusty” Bowers, as well as Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and his deputy Gabriel Sterling described efforts by Dumpf and his associates to overturn the election results. So this could be considered good news as one law enforcement agency is poised to do something about what was disclosed during the committee hearings.

Tomorrow will be the last public hearing for a while, it appears, since a person close to the select committee investigation told The Independent the panel was delaying any further hearings until after the July 4th recess, in part because the committee has been receiving a steady stream of new evidence and tips in recent days. The panel will hold its fifth hearing tomorrow, where former acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen; former Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue; and former assistant attorney general for the office of legal counsel Steven Engel will all testify. Can the nation wait for two weeks or more for the next hearing?

This just in: Now the Department of Justice has subpoenaed the Georgia Republican Party chairman, David Shafer, for information related to the fake elector scheme there. This represents a significant step in the outrageous plot because he played a central role in organizing the fake slate of electors from Georgia and coordinated the effort with the Dumpf campaign. Thus these small steps represent the beginning of some law enforcement action as a result of the mounting evidence being presented at the House Select Committee hearings.

If you thought the former Vice President to Donald Dumpf was a person you might want to admire because of his standing up to his criminal boss and refusing to decertify the election results as Dumpf and his cronies so desperately wanted, then think again. Chris Cillizza has written an analysis for CNN in which the former VP, Mike Pence, laughingly said this to Larry Kudlow, Fox Business host, during an interview the former vice president had with him on Monday, in which Pence said no president in his lifetime has lied as often as JOE BIDEN [my caps]. Is this guy as delusional as Dumpf here? He also absurdly asserted that Biden “was more disconnected from the American people than we see today.” Cillizza was dumbfounded by this statement from the vanilla VP. Then Cillizza provides some juicy facts to counter Pence’s ridiculous claims about Biden.

According to The Washington Post’s Fact Checker, former demagogue Dumpf said 30,573 things that were either false or misleading during his four years in office. “That averages out to 21 a day. And by his last year in office, Dumpf was saying upwards of 39 false or misleading statements a day.”

Another sobering fact about the former president is that he continues to lie about the 2020 presidential election in which his lies have played a central role in the motivation for those who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, resulting in nine deaths and numerous injuries to Capitol Police officers.

Cillizza comments on an exchange between Dumpf and a reporter in August 2020, in which the journalist asked Dumpf point blank: “Do you regret at all, all the lying you’ve done to the American people?” As would be expected, Dumpf pretended to ignore the question. He had no reasonable answer to this sick behavioral pattern of his.

The reason for why Pence is acting like a stupid person here, Cillizza claims, is that he is a rank politician trying to find ways to rebuild his fraying relationship with the Dumpf base, a relationship badly damaged by his refusal to go along with attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Boy, how low people like Pence would go to hold onto political office. Truth becomes a casualty in this type of politician’s algorithm to hold onto the perks of office! A set of sound principles or a conscience – or even the truth – seems not to matter to someone like Pence, a repugnican. Very sad that we’ve come to this juncture in our history.

On a more celebratory note, today Elliot and I can finally note the completion of our interminable kitchen project, with the arrival of a professional wall paperer coming to us this morning at 8:30 to finish what our former contractor started but failed to complete. Today our new guy, a very young Brazilian by the name of “Marcelo” finished the kitchen in about 4 and a half hours, without taking a break, even. We then began transferring items from the living room back into the kitchen. So we are almost back to normal after being in disarray for about 4 and a half months. It’s a very satisfying feeling.

Remember to watch the last of the January 6 committee hearing tomorrow, which does not air as I originally thought, which was 8 p.m.; it goes on around 1 p.m. again as the previous ones.

Stay safe and be well.
