Coronavirus Diary

Today is June 24, 2022. Today will live in infamy for millions of American women as the Supreme Court under the aegis of Clarence Thomas gutted Roe v. Wade, which had been in effect for almost 50 years. This opinion will impact so many women negatively and will result in many unwanted births and, possibly, even deaths. It is so devastating in my opinion that this ruling plus the decision yesterday against New York’s ban on carrying guns in public, which was really stupid and mind boggling, were handed down in just two days. These two decisions just show the awfulness of a Supreme Court that has gone rogue like most of the Republican Party in this country. They do not represent the majority of Americans’ views anymore and there must be a federal codification of abortion passed by Congress, but who sincerely believes this could happen, given how divided both parties are. This despicable decision should now galvanize everyone, both women and men who will bear their partners’ unwanted children after this date, to go to the polls in November and vote ALL Republicans out of office. There must be retribution for the party that destroyed an almost fifty-year legal precedent that has been overturned in one horrible moment. There are now protests in the streets and it’s heartening to see this. I hope that these demonstrations will continue for a long time.

Talking very early on after the decision was handed down, President Biden echoed the sentiments of a majority of Americans when he said, “It’s a sad day for the court and for the country.” He did call on Congress to codify the right to an abortion – something that’s probably unlikely given the split balance of power in the Senate.

Everyone in this country should know that it was three conservative justices named by one corrupt and traitorous president that were at the core of today’s decision to upend the scales of justice and eliminate a fundamental right for women in this country. However, it was Clarence Thomas who wrote the decision, and he was appointed by another Republican, George H. W. Bush. Biden also said, “Make no mistake, this decision is a culmination of a deliberate effort over decades to upset the balance of our law. It’s a realization of an extreme ideology and a tragic error of the Supreme Court in my view. The court has done what it’s never done before, expressly take away a constitutional right that is so fundamental to so many Americans that had already been recognized. The court’s decision to do so will have real and immediate consequences.”

With this terrible ruling, the Supreme Court has codified its disrespect for women and with yesterday’s unpopular decision against New York, it showed its disrespect for all New Yorkers’ continuation of life and limb. People will not have any respect for this institution ever again. It was truly a very sad day for America today.

Should I even say have a good weekend?

Stay safe and be well.
