Coronavirus Diary

Today is Monday, August 8, 2022. The breaking news: The FBI has just raided the Florida home of the wanna-be dictator living in Mar-A-Largo today. The former demagogue announced the raid himself in a statement where he whined, “They even broke into my safe.” He described the search as a “raid,” which it was not ostensibly clear why the agents were there, but leave it to your darling whiner-in-chief to describe it thusly: his house was “under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.” Maybe in this one respect, Dumpf got the number of FBI agents correct in his description of the “raid.” He went on to further complain, “After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate.”

No one has responded to this story as of yet.

According to images produced by New York Times writer Maggie Haberman for her forthcoming book Confidence Man, there are photos of the badly coiffed ex-president flushing documents down the toilet. These documents were classified, of course. CNN has previously reported how Dumpf flouted presidential record-keeping laws and would often tear up documents, drafts, and memos after reading them. This document dump is covered in an online article for Salon by Igor Derysh entitled “‘News dump’: Twitter blows up over photos of Trump documents flushed down White House toilet.”

Shedding some light on why the FBI might have invaded Mar-A-Largo, Axios published photos on Monday which showed Dumpf’s handwritten notes flushed down a White House toilet that were obtained by Haberman.

According to an excerpt from Haberman’s book, White House staff “periodically discovered wads of printed paper clogging a toilet – and believed the president had flushed pieces of paper.” The report raised concerns that Dumpf may have illegally destroyed records that are required to be preserved.

Sherman turned the photos over to Axios to corroborate her reporting. One photo shows a White House toilet with an unintelligible note, a source told Haberman. Another photo shows a note with Dumpf’s handwriting thrown into the toilet on an overseas trip. It’s unclear what the note says, but it mentions the name of Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the No. 3 Republican and Dumpf acolyte in the House.

Remember that this search warrant by the FBI could not have been issued without approval from a federal judge, which signifies that the Justice Department – which is engaged in multiple investigations into Dumpf and his allies – has probable cause that a crime was committed and that evidence exists at Mar-A-Largo. Federal prosecutors reportedly began a grand jury investigation in May into the alleged mishandling of classified documents that wound up at Mar-A-Largo.

Commenting on the explosive nature of today’s raid of a former president’s domicile, journalist and historian Garrett Graff tweeted, “Taken together, this is one of the most significant, sensitive, and politically explosive actions the US Justice Department and FBI has ever taken – one of a tiny handful of times it’s ever investigated a president.”

I just heard that if this criminal is indicted on these charges, of destroying classified documents, this could disqualify him from ever running for political office in the future. I say, “Bring it on” and indict the man as soon as possible. It would be wonderful news if he can never run for office ever again! I wonder what the deplorable repugnicans now think of their Golden Calf? What will they do once he’s indicted? I doubt that all of them will continue to swear allegiance to this once-infallible Golden Idol.

In pursuit of this breaking story, how many of us will want to buy tomorrow’s edition of The New York Times to save for posterity? I have the paper delivered to my door, but I might decide to buy several more papers to keep just for that reason. I’m waiting for the moment when our daily papers run the banner headline, “Former president indicted on __________ .”

There is no need to report on any other news tonight: This is extremely significant enough. I will say that Elliot and I shouted with glee when we heard this blockbuster story on the MSNBC news show a little after 7 p.m. No one could have predicted that this would have happened right now. But it did! Maybe Attorney General Merrick Garland did receive the message then: the man needs to be prosecuted, no matter what!

The big question is whether this development will arouse Dumpf’s rabble of supporters to commit acts of violence in the streets, as he has prophesied. Wouldn’t it be grand if nothing really happened because the tired old man has lost deep support from his once-rabid supporters? Let’s see what does happen.

So I will continue to cheer this good news.

Stay safe and be well.
