Today is Monday, August 15, 2022. Today we learn that former Dumpf lapdog Rudy Giuliani has been informed by prosecutors in Georgia that he is a target [finally!] of the special purpose grand jury investigating whether former whiner-in-chief Donald Trump and his cronies violated the law in their efforts to flip the 2020 election results in Georgia. This stunning news is covered in an online CNN article by Sara Murray, Jason Morris, and Gloria Borger entitled “Rudy Giuliani told by prosecutors he is a target in Georgia 2020 presidential election probe.”
A prosecutor from the Fulton County District Attorney’s office called the former New York mayor to inform him that he is now considered a target of their investigation, said Bob Costello, another lawyer for the Dumpf loyalist. This means he is considered fodder for being indicted anytime soon.
This new development marks the first time a close adviser to Dumpf has been notified he is a subject in a criminal investigation into the then-president’s inner circle around the aftermath of the turbulent presidential election. Both the Georgia grand jury and the Justice Department are probing the postelection efforts to help Dumpf retain his office.
The cringeworthy defender of Dumpf’s illegal efforts to steal the election has been made public today alongside other developments in the Georgia investigation – with a court ruling that Senator Lindsey Graham must testify – as well as in several other criminal probes touching upon the ex-president and his advisers.
Those include the probe into the handling of classified records at Mar-a-Lago after Dumpf’s abominable presidency and the federal grand jury that is investigating the events of January 6, 2021.
In another startling move, the January 6 federal grand jury subpoenaed Eric Herschmann, a former Trump White House lawyer and senior adviser, CNN and other outlets reported today.
The New York Times first reported that Giuliani was being told he was being investigated for his involvement in the Georgia election debacle. Already, we the public will expect the disbarred attorney will plead the Fifth Amendment against self-recrimination during his questioning before prosecutors – just like his golf-playing chum did when he was deposed in New York recently.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a Democrat, has detailed the far-reaching scope of the investigation, saying that it includes potential “solicitation of election fraud, the making of false statements to state and local governmental bodies, conspiracy, racketeering, violation of oath of office and any involvement in violence or threats related to the election’s administration.” Giuliani and his Dumpf-obeisant allies have made no secret of their pushing false claims of mass election fraud.
When the former mayor of New York met with Georgia state legislators three times in December 2020 in the wake of the presidential election – twice in person and once remotely – Giuliani spread conspiracy theories about widespread irregularities and fraud in the state. Among his many false claims, Giuliani accused two Atlanta election workers of smuggling fraudulent ballots for Joe Biden in suitcases. All were proved to be nonsense and that is why this lying piece of shit is being investigated for his alleged crimes in Georgia.
The news that Rudy Giuliani is being investigated as a potential witness in the ongoing Georgia criminal investigation and the fact that pusillanimous Senator Lindsey Graham is being forced to testify in the Georgia investigation, as well as the fact that Eric Herschmann is being subpoenaed can only one have effect on the Orange Menace: it should rob him of a good night’s sleep as he contemplates his future under a criminal investigation. As I’m hearing on the Lawrence O’Donnell show while I’m writing this blog, “it’s another bad day for Donald Trump.” I say it’s poetic justice for someone who has caused so much pain and misery to Americans since he became a presidential candidate for president in 2015.
Another thing that will cause extreme worry for the ex-president is the Justice Department’s unwillingness to release the unredacted affidavit that helped them secure the search warrant on his estate in Florida. This situation is covered in an online article for RawStory by Matthew Chapman entitled “Details in latest DOJ filing could ‘drive Trump to be even more worried’: legal expert.”
Today former solicitor general Neal Katyal took to Twitter to argue that one of the key points in the document will give the former demagogue further cause for alarm. The provision in the affidavit mentions the probable compromising of witnesses in the ongoing investigation will have the result of giving Dumpf additional agita.
This comes then as Dumpf and his minions reportedly are searching for a “mole” within Mar-a-Lago who is probably working with the FBI to give them information about where and what classified information might have been stashed on the former president’s enormous property. Hmmm, could it be Melania, his own wife, who is the informant? Some sources have indicated that it could even be the ex-president’s own son-in-law Jared Kushner who is the FBI mole. I say, who cares who it is as long as there is someone inside the Florida compound who is cooperating with law enforcement authorities to help bring down a brazen criminal!
Maybe with this news about two additional allies of the former president being investigated for their possible involvement in a criminal case in Georgia could yield an amazing trifecta of indictments: Rudy Giuliani, Lindsey Graham, and then Donald Trump. Wouldn’t that be comforting for the rule of law, especially for the principle that no one is above the law! This would restore most Americans’ faith in Lady Justice – that a band of criminal rogues, no matter how significant they are, can be brought to justice no matter what.
Anyway, it’s too early for cheering here. We must wait for the inevitable results of where all of this is heading. But things seem to be picking up steam, that’s for sure.
So stay safe and be well. Who knows what we’ll hear tomorrow.
One other item: tomorrow is Primary Day for Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney who is the vice chair of the House select committee investigating the events of January 6, 2021, and is a fierce critic of the ex-president. Unfortunately, she is projected to lose to a Dumpf-backed election denier by the name of Harriet Hageman. It’s a sad day in America if this opponent will win the primary because she has the support of a delusional liar – and voters will just back her because of that. It will be a miracle if she holds onto her seat.
