Today is Wednesday, September 7, 2022. As the investigation into the Orange Blob’s seizure of top-secret documents from the federal government continues apace, what one would expect from repugnicans at this inflection moment continues to shock and puzzle us, as some vociferous voices in the Senate are still aligning themselves with the potential traitor, people like Senator Marco Rubio of Florida who, thankfully, is now under fire for his despicable defense of the former Dementer-in-Chief. He is soundly being lambasted for saying nothing about the nature of the documents that were seized in the demagogue’s Florida beach compound. In public statements that have now been widely condemned, Rubio attacked the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) rather than admit the former president’s reported removal and refusal to return highly classified documents is a threat to democracy, the nation’s defense, and worldwide security.
In an online article appearing in NCRM (New Civil Rights Movement), by David Badash, the controversial comments by the vice chair of the Intelligence Committee (who by his ridiculous comments here demonstrate that he has no intelligence at all) are laid out in ‘Doesn’t Give a Damn’: Rubio Slammed for Being More Angry About Leak Than Trump Holding Foreign Gov’t Nuclear Secrets.”
National security experts and journalists have all slammed Rubio’s statements in light of the serious nature of the mishandling of the very sensitive documents found in Dumpf’s unsecured estate. Rubio had claimed that the government’s case was merely one about “storage.” He actually told a local Florida reporter, “I don’t think a fight over storage of documents is worthy of what they’ve done.” This weak defense of the ex-president’s unlawful actions just makes the dimwitted senator seem unfazed by the whole situation.
This morning, Rubio appeared on “Fox and Friends” to attack the DOJ for the leak of the existence of the top-secret classified nuclear material. This is what bothers him, not the fact that it was just lying on the floor like some Walgreen’s receipt.
Rubio in his desperate attempt to deflect the seriousness of the situation just sounds stupid. He falsely claimed that Dumpf was not asked to return the thousands of documents and other items, which he did, ignoring the grand jury subpoena sent to Dumpf demanding he return them.
The criticism of Rubio came fast and furious. Attorney and writer Luppe B. Luppen observes, “Rubio is indistinguishable from Trump’s defense attorney in this clip.” Luppen excoriates Rubio for getting his facts wrong – that Dumpf lied about returning all of the documents and that’s why the “raid” was conducted.
Attorney Amee Vanderpool notes, “To be clear: a Republican Senator is saying that we can’t trust the FBI or DOJ.” Another critic, Mark Hertling, the former Commanding General of United States Army Europe and the Seventh Army, said that the Washington Post‘s story on Tuesday night announcing the existence of nuclear secret documents in the cache of the material taken from the Mar-a-Lago search warrant is “just the beginning . . . and it’s gonna get much, much worse.” He admits that this is more than a ‘storage problem.’
Journalist Jim Swift, who has been a staffer to Republican members of the House and Senate, points to Rubio’s remarks on “Fox and Friends” and says, “This from the guy who said we couldn’t trust Trump with the nuclear codes. What a phony.”
Condé Nast Legal Affairs Editor Luke Zaleski, also pointing to the Rubio interview, adds: “The Republican party’s willingness to straight-up lie en masse in total lockstep about literally anything is the gravest threat we face.”
Echoing the sentiments of Zaleski in a similar way, David Corn, the popular MSNBC analyst and D.C. bureau chief for Mother Jones, says Marco Rubio “is the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee. And he doesn’t give a damn about protecting classified information. Now that’s a national security threat.” Here, here.
This rank apology for an ex-president’s ongoing abuse of democratic norms should disqualify this senator from winning reelection in the upcoming midterms. His challenger, Val Demings, should seize this recent interview with Rubio and use it to her advantage immediately. Demings should repeat every asinine statement that Rubio made in this interview with Fox News on the campaign trail and say that Rubio is just as much a threat to national security as demonstrated by his cavalier attitude toward what was taken by the traitor-in-training formerly of the White House.
It’s getting late here. I will mention that former First Lady Michelle Obama made an apparent swipe at the former president in a speech today at the White House while she appeared with her husband, Barack Obama, for a portrait unveiling for her and her husband with the current President and First Lady Jill Biden. In her comments, she said, “You see, the people that make their voices heard with their vote. We hold an inauguration to ensure a peaceful transition of power. Those of us lucky enough to serve work, as Barack said, as hard as we can for as long as we can, as long as the people choose to keep us here. And, once our time is up, we move on. And all that remains in this hallowed place are our good efforts and these portraits.” I don’t think you have to be a Senator Rubio to ascertain who Michelle Obama is referencing here. As everyone knows, Dumpf is still claiming that the 2020 presidential election was stolen and rife with voter fraud.
So I’m moving on here.
Stay safe and be well.
