Coronavirus Diary

Today is Saturday, September 17, 2022. It’s late here, owing to Elliot and I entertaining our good friend “Mark” at our place with dinner and a film. We all began watching a film I taped off the Movie Channel called Lucky Grandma and Mark just left after 10. So I’m a little tired from serving our amiable guest and from taking a long walk to Rego Park, my old neighborhood. The weather was just glorious.

The only thing I will report on is a new poll that came out that gives Democrats a slight advantage over Republicans ahead of the midterms. I’m still dumbfounded that the numbers are not way higher for Democrats, given the lack of clear choices that all repugnicans are now offering voters in November. Does anyone watch the real news anymore? Is everyone watching just the “fake” news like Fox News, Newsmax, and other outlets? Or are people just ignorant of the danger that repugnicans pose to American democracy or just want autocrats to take over the reins of power in this country?

The results of this poll come from a Times/Siena poll, according to The New York Times. This news is covered for Benzinga by Shanthi Rexaline entitled “Trump A Big Reason For Democrats Gaining Momentum Ahead Of Midterms, New Poll Finds.”

The numbers break down this way: About 46% of registered voters said they would vote for Democratic Congressional candidates in their districts compared to 44%, who pledged allegiance to Republican candidates, according to the survey.

The survey polled 1,399 registered voters nationwide from September 6 to September 14.

The previous poll conducted in July saw Democrats edging past repugnicans by just one measly percentage point, The Times said.

This improvement, according to the report, is due to falling gas prices and President Joe Biden’s success with the passing of key legislation. The midterms have nothing to do with inflation, but this is how self-interested voters will cast their ballots.

Another reason for the higher percentage points for Democrats right now is the despicable return to the national stage of the ex-president who is like a toe fungus that never goes away. So as long as this boorish, demented insurrectionist pokes his obese frame onto the national scene, he gives more reason for people to refute republicans in the midterms. Actually, he needs to stay in the public eye for us to declare victory over repugnicans in November. Another factor here is the rising opposition among the public to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn a verdict that legalized abortion, the survey added.

This statement from The New York Times is unsupportable, I feel, but here it is: “Republicans would lead by six percentage points in the race for Congress, if they could merely win over voters who say they agree with the G.O.P. most on the economy.” But voters do not realize that repugnicans will do nothing about the economy anyway if they ever – God forbid! – retake Congress. It would be a disaster if they did. Democrats, you must know, are the only ones in government that are doing things for Americans, not repugnicans. They are only shipping migrants to other presumed “liberal” states. And have ended abortion rights for half of the population. And have declared war on public education by banning books and declaring war on Critical Race Theory that is not even taught in elementary, middle, or high schools at all.

It seems like a new Netflix series is causing a buzz among viewers and that series is called Sins of Our Mother. And guess what? Two days ago, I just meandered into the first episode of this three-part true crime thriller. According to an online article for LAD Bible by Jake Massey, the new series has left viewers horrified and “disgusted” by the series. Oops, the online journal seems to be a British enterprise since it mentions that the series is trending to number two in the United Kingdom. It is also in the top 10 here in the United States, from what I have ascertained.

For those of you who have never heard of it, the series is about the shocking story of one formerly normal housewife, mother, and woman of God by the name of Lori Vallow who becomes brainwashed by a member in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FDLS). She soon becomes embroiled in a conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her fourth husband, her fifth husband’s wife, and her two youngest children. She is still in jail, waiting to stand trial for these heinous crimes.

One of the principal interviewees for the series is Lori’s surviving son Colby who provides exclusive insight into his family’s backstory as well as their present-tense narrative as Lori faces justice. The question at the heart of this gripping series is: “How did a seemingly normal woman become the most notorious mother in America?” I hasten to add that the extremes of certain religious cults is basically part of the answer.
