Today is Saturday, October 22, 2022. Now that we have only 18 days until the pivotal midterm elections, there is a growing fear that repugnicans might actually win more seats in Congress than was originally believed only a few months ago. This surge in the fortunes of repugnican over Democratic candidates is unsettling, to say the least. How can voters already forget that repgunicans want to bring down democracy if they win the House or the Senate? I can’t believe that this is happening right now in this country. What happened to that momentum that was supposedly created by the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June? A column by New York Times columnist David Brooks in Friday’s paper tries to illuminate the change in what was perceived to be the possible outcome of the critical elections in November. The column is entitled “Why Republicans Are Surging.”
Brooks writes in the first paragraph that the Hobbs decision which led to the demolishment of a woman’s right to an abortion did “lead to a surge of voter registrations.” Democrats swept to victory in unlikely places – Alaska and Kansas and even in upstate New York. But that momentum, unfortunately, has not survived the fall. Thus the latest New York Times/Sienna College poll found that 49 percent of likely voters said they planned to vote for a Republican for Congress and 45 percent said they planned to vote for a Democrat. Only last month, the latter held a one-point lead over the party of Dumpf.
Republicans even lead among Independents overall by 10 points.
Brooks then goes on to write that we might be looking at a red wave election that will enable repugnicans to easily take back the House and maybe even the Senate. This will be ghastly, but no one seems to care.
To understand how this situation reversed itself only in the last two months, Brooks posits several reasons for this absurd shift of voters’ preference to the fascist party masquerading as repugnicans. Therefore, one of those reasons centers on voters relying more on repugnicans to do something on the economy, which most rational people know is bullshit, but in a recent AP-NORC poll, voters supposedly trust repugnicans to do a better job handling the economy, by 39 percent to 29 percent. This phenomenon points up a weakness in Democratic messaging, which is really disheartening when it is Democrats who recently passed a $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Not one worthless repugnican voted for the package, as I recall. Democrats must go on the offensive regarding what they have done to improve the economy over their feckless red state colleagues.
Another reason for this imbalance is the perception that Democrats are “soft” on crime, but this is also a canard as perpetuated by repugnicans. But here is where repugnicans must be denounced every time they speak about fucking Second Amendment rights. They do nothing, nothing, to address the problem of gun violence. Val Demings in a debate with her repugnican opponent, Marco Rubio, who should be replaced finally, excoriated him for doing nothing on this issue. She sounded electrifying on that stage, but will she unseat this worthless incumbent in a red state like Florida?
The third explanation for this possible victory by repugnicans next month concerns Democrats not winning back Hispanics, which is inexplicable, in my mind. How could anyone in this ethnic community support a bastard like Ron “DeSant-ASS” in Florida over his cheap political stunt of shipping Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard over the summer or the busing of South American migrants to “sanctuary” states by Texas Governor Greg Abbott? In one poll, Florida governor DeSantis is leading the Democrat Charlie Crist by 16 points among Latinos likely to vote. To me, this is unfathomable. I’m sure that DeSantis is just contemptuous of this minority sector living in his state.
Also, what is hard to grasp is that the January 6 committee and warnings about MAGA fascism didn’t change minds, as we thought it would. Brooks admits that the “committee’s work has been morally and legally important.” However, Dumpf’s favorability rating is “pretty much where it was at the committee’s first public hearing.” What the fuck!
Brooks opines that voters might be overwhelmed by immediate concerns such as food prices. Then he writes, “It could be that voters have become so cynical and polarized that scandal and corruption just don’t move people much anymore.” Just look at the scandalous campaign of the boob Herschel Walker in Georgia. He must have set some kind of record for the most scandals in one political season, but he’s still in a competitive race with Senator Raphael Warnock. Maybe ten years ago or more, this clown would have been rejected by the electorate as being unfit to even run in the race before the first votes would have been cast. But not today! This guy actually wears his stupidity like a police badge and people still swoon over him.
The last point Brooks makes is that the repugnicans might just have a clearer narrative than Democrats. What he first writes is so true, but it doesn’t reflect the surreal reality operating in this country since the reign of Dumpf, and that is, “The Trumpified G.O.P. deserves to be a marginalized and disgraced force in American life.” The disgusting repugnican narrative that is making inroads with fearful Americans is that our streets are being overrun by the homeless, that 5-year-olds are being taught sex ed, and that progressives run woke corporations, have opened the border letting in millions of illegal immigrants, and have refused to do anything about fentanyl deaths and other things that affect regular people. This rank appeal to people’s fears seems to be working as voters turn to repugnicans instead of Democrats. To me, this is horrifying.
All I can say if this does become reality after November 8, then Americans deserve what they get. Damn these unenlightened Americans who will place the reins of power in the hands of un-American legislators.
We need some sort of miracle to open people’s eyes before Tuesday, November 8, turns into a victory for fascism in this country.
This is enough from me.
Have a nice Sunday, even though the weather here is supposed to be inclement.
Stay safe and be well.
