Today is Monday, January 2, 2023. The nation will hold its breath as the House will be turned over to disorderly Republicans tomorrow and that lying son-of-a-bitch Rep. George Santos assumes his seat, despite the bombshell revelations arising from his sham of a professional and educational record that were revealed by various news outlets. Anyone else who was found to have lied on his professional resume would be terminated immediately from whatever position he or she was being interviewed for. But not Santos! How fair is that? Hopefully, this mirror version of Herr Dumpf will not be able to serve his first term in office because of the various investigations just announced to be under way.
There is mayhem among these MAGA Republicans who cannot even appoint a House Speaker in the miserable form of Kevin McCarthy who seems to lack a majority as late as tonight. That means this weakest leader ever will not serve as the Speaker of the House if he does not achieve a majority among the rank and file. So far, he has a historically small majority for a potential first-time speaker, as this weasel remains historically unpopular compared with other House members who have petitioned to become speaker. Also, McCarthy’s Republican Party secured only 222 seats in the 2022 midterms, leaving him little room for error to get to 218 votes – the magic number needed to anoint him speaker. McCarthy can only afford to lose the support of four Republicans, and the list of GOP lawmakers who have said they will vote against him is longer than that.
This scramble to name a successor to Democrat Nancy Pelosi is the focus of an article in today’s Daily News by Shant Shahrigian entitled “Hustle for the House: McCarthy top speaker choice, but still grappling with far right.”
In his attempt to get to the top of the Hill, McCarthy spent the last days of December trying to win over the likes of such conservative dirtbags like Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Matt Goetz (R-FL), who promised to vote as a bloc with three other GOP lawmakers, according to Axios.
Rep. Stony Hoyer (D-MD) said to CNN, “I would be surprised if he doesn’t” have enough votes to win. Hoyer did have this to say if McCarthy does somehow get the 218 votes to become speaker, “If he gets 218 votes, has the ability to put together the votes to be the leader of the party – he will then be tested as to whether or not he can lead.” So this could be a situation of “he’s damned if he doesn’t, and he’s damned if he does.” Hoyer acknowledged that McCarthy has not given up in trying to sew up the speakership of the House.
But McCarthy himself has admitted before the holidays his precarious position, saying, “It’s all in jeopardy.”
If McCarthy fails to get 218 votes right away on Tuesday, the process of determining the speaker could drag on through numerous ballots. “That would mark a significant break from recent decades, in which new speakers have been named in just one round of voting.”
Even without McCarthy becoming speaker for whatever reason, America will have to tolerate this combative approach on the part of House repugnicans in which they have promised to go on the offensive against the Biden administration. With odious Jim Jordan (R-OH) set to be chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and Rep. James Comer (R-KY) helming the House Oversight Committee, repugnicans are poised to probe the business affairs of President Biden’s son Hunter Biden. This is exactly what this country needs. New GOP leaders say they will also investigate the federal government’s response to COVID-19 and more. Would these knuckleheads ever imagine probing the initial approach to COVID by their Golden Idol, even? Fucking, no! They still don’t acknowledge there was an “insurrection” on January 6, 2021.
Last year, Comer called the Hunter Biden investigation a “top priority.” Would Americans agree that this stupid, superfluous investigation be considered a “top priority” in their minds? I sincerely doubt that. Let’s hope these ridiculous “investigations” go nowhere, considering the disarray of this fascist party.
This just in concerning the potential downfall of George Santos: The New York Times has announced that Brazilian authorities intend to revive its fraud investigation into the newbie Congressman. The paper has reported this today that “law enforcement officials in Brazil will likely reinstate fraud charges against U.S. Rep.-elect George Santos as the New York Republican officially assumes his role in the U.S. House Tuesday under a cloud of suspicion over his dubious resume.” This story is covered in an online CNN article by Jack Forrest entitled “New York Times: Brazilian authorities intend to revive fraud case against George Santos.”
Those charges involve a stolen checkbook in 2008, after police suspended an investigation into Santos after they were unable to find him for nearly a decade. Maybe he used other identities after this incident, who knows? Now that Santos’s location has been pinpointed, Brazilian authorities will make a formal request to the Justice Department to notify the Rep.-elect of the charges.
“The criminal case, according to The Times, citing court records it has reviewed, stems from a visit Santos made to a small clothing store in Niterol, a city outside of Rio de Janeiro, where Santos spent nearly $700 out of the stolen checkbook using a fake name.”
As recently as 2011, Santos was supposedly charged with embezzlement in a Brazilian court, according to case records from the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice. However, court records from 2013 state that the charge was archived after court summons went unanswered and they were unable to locate Santos. Until now!
In his defense, if you believe him, like would you ever believe Trump again, Santos denied that he had been charged with any crime in Brazil [they couldn’t find him, that’s why!] saying, “I am not a criminal here – not here or in Brazil or any jurisdiction in the world. Absolutely not. That didn’t happen.”
As you might know, Santos is facing investigations right here in his own backyard, specifically from the U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern District of New York and the Nassau County district attorney’s office as well. The latter investigation is probing Santos’s finances, as he faces questions about his sudden wealth and loans totaling more than $700,000 he made to his successful 2022 campaign.
So if Santos does take the oath of office tomorrow [to me, it’s ludicrous if he does], he might be legislating from a jail cell sometime in the near future.
Another breaking story tonight concerns the collapse of Buffalo Bills star Damar Hamlin midway in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin, 24, collapsed on the field and CPR was administered to the player before he was driven out of the stadium in an ambulance to a local hospital. In a wise move, the NFL postponed the game. Coincidentally, I was watching MSNBC when the terrible accident occurred. He is listed as being in critical condition. This incident has also prompted a dialogue among sportscasters about the dangerous aspects of football, a game I have never really watched. It’s certainly a dangerous sport, no doubt about it. What about the perils of sustaining concussions during a lifetime of being pummeled on the football field? Herschel Walker was the ideal poster child for the pitfalls of playing football a long time. Let’s not get into why this was so.
In the meantime, let’s pray that Mr. Hamlin does recover from this life-threatening situation. His teammates were shown sobbing on the field as he was taken away by the ambulance. That’s how deeply the other players were affected by this shocking incident. I’m sure the spectators were just as affected by this disturbing occurrence.
Stay safe and be well.
