Coronavirus Diary

Today is Wednesday, March 1, 2023. Is Donald Dumpf worried about the probe into his criminal conduct by Special Counsel Jack Smith who seems to be ramping up his investigation into the former president’s alleged illegal activities? According to an online article in 19FortyFive by Stephen Silver, the answer is a resounding “yes.” His article is entitled “Is Donald Trump About To be Charged?”

Here is an overview of how the former insurrectionist could be having sleepless nights at his Florida manse, Mar-a-Lago. Silver characterizes Smith’s probe as reaching “advanced stages,” which portend looming disaster for the “Un-Truth” Social honcho.

Silver reports that there have been quite a few reports in recent months that Jack Smith’s Special Counsel investigation is “ramping up” or “gaining momentum.” The Wall Street Journal this week relayed that the probe is “heating up” and has reached “advanced stages.”

In other words, Dumpf has reason to be worried.

The aggressive steps the investigation has taken include subpoenaing former Vice President Mike Pence and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

Talking to the Journal, former prosecutor and now law professor Randall Eliason said, “In a typical case, these top-level, inner-circle people are some of the last people you’d expect to be subpoenaed.”

Eliason further elaborated, “You don’t talk to them at the beginning of the investigation, because you don’t know enough yet. Just looking at that, when I see subpoenas to the highest-level inner-circle people, that makes me think they’re close to wrapping up.”

The report also said that Smith is expected to issue a final report whenever he wraps up his work, whether or not charges are ultimately brought.

According also to the Journal, Smith has been questioning Dumpf’s lawyers.

Another piece of proof that Dumpf is actually worried about spending some time in a jail cell is his juvenile rant over Smith being a “Mad Dog Psycho.” This is how the pouty child called the prosecutor on his ineptly called “Truth Social” network on Monday. I won’t write what the Orange Fiend further wrote on his platform. It’s elementary-school-fueled Dumpf at his best – or, we can say, at his worst. In the recent past, Dumpf denounced Smith as a “Trump Hater” and “political hit man” and a politically weaponized monster.” Pretty subtle language, eh?

Reviewing these boorish posts, Maddow Blog said this, “What matters most is the former president’s apparent panic: He appears desperate to discredit a highly respected career prosecutor, and he apparently believes frantic online tantrums will do the trick.” Not this time, Mr. Pathological Liar.

Meanwhile, The Washington Post ran a big report today about arguments between FBI agents and prosecutors prior to the raid on Mar-a-Lago last year, the case that forms the other part of the Special Counsel investigation.

It’s a story that actually appears to contradict Dumpf’s frequent insinuations that the FBI and Justice Department are conspiring against him.

The Post described the dispute this way, “Prosecutors argued that new evidence suggested Trump was knowingly concealing secret documents at his Palm Beach, Fla., home and urged the FBI to conduct a surprise raid at the property.” However, “two senior FBI officials who would be in charge of leading the search resisted the plan as too combative and proposed instead to seek Trump’s permission to search his property, according to the four people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a sensitive investigation.” As you know, the prosecutors – thank God – won the argument. All I can say about this development is how in Hell could any FBI agent believe such a liar as Dumpf here and would even ask for his permission to search his property? Lawrence O’Donnell is now refuting this charge on his program; he can’t believe any FBI agent would believe Dumpf’s bullshit. The only rationale for the FBI agent’s timidity in the case is that the agents could possibly have been members of the Republican Party and wanted to shield the MAGA repugnican from such scrutiny. That is no reason, nevertheless, to exhibit any fearfulness in such an important case. This could explain why this case has been taking so long to resolve. Again, any other citizen other than Dumpf doing the same thing as he would have been charged months ago. That is why justice must not be denied here.

Now that we know that the probe into Dumpf is “ramping up,” I hope something is announced very soon. It’s a good time then to mention here that Elliot and I are going on a trip on Sunday, March 5 and lasting until Wednesday, March 22, for a total of 17 days. We’re flying to Paris first, then are traveling to Israel to stay with Elliot’s cousins in a suburb of Tel Aviv, and then we’re flying to the south of France, where we’ll be staying for about 5 days. This area is better known as the French Riviera. This will mark our first time there. I didn’t want to disclose the trip on my last blog, which would be Saturday, so I decided to mention the excursion now. This trip marks our first major holiday in 2023 and we’re really looking forward to it.

In another piece for The Washington Post, opinion writer and MSNBC contributor Jennifer Rubin stresses another truth that should be underscored in this case into Dumpf’s activities, which is that Dumpf’s “enablers,” people like the “Ghoul,” Rudy Giuliani, batshit crazy lawyer, Sidney Powell, and John Eastman, the architect of the January 6, 2021, Capitol coup attempt, should all face legal consequences as well. She states that Dumpf is not the only Republican who deserves accountability for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. She asserts that Dumpf’s enablers must also face consequences for the former president’s “assault on our democracy.”

Rubin argues, “They would never have gotten far, or even off the ground, without the participation of right-wing media executives [Rupert Murdoch, perhaps?], lawyers, and pliant state officials.” She forcefully cites, “Without holding these enablers accountable, democracy and the rule of law will remain at risk.”

Rubin does cite some examples of some Dumpf allies facing some accountability for their antidemocratic actions, but writes that there needs to be a lot more of them.

In the case of John Eastman, Rubin observes that he faces disciplinary charges from the California state bar. The D.C. bar has similarly filed ethics charges against Jeffrey Clark, the former Justice Department official whom Dumpf attempted to appoint as acting attorney general. And Dumpf attorney Rudy Giuliani has been suspended from the New York bar. The opinion writer calls for “discipline” for any pro-Dumpf attorneys “who played a part in the coup attempt” of late 2020 and early 2021.

She notes, “(pro-Trump lawyers) filed more than 60 bogus challenges to the 2020 election on behalf of the Trump campaign; devised the phony elector scheme; and assisted Trump in attempting to strong-arm state election officials. For the sake of accountability and to deter other lawyers from similar efforts in the future, those involved must be disciplined. If they committed crimes, they must be prosecuted.”

No arguing with Ms. Rubin’s recommendations here. These clowns should not get away with the attempted murder of democracy over a two-year period. As the saying goes, “Justice is blind.” To prove that axiom, these powerful individuals must be held accountable in this country’s judicial system.

Anyway, it’s getting late here.

Stay safe and be well.
