Coronavirus Diary

Today is Friday, June 9, 2023. Today the indictment against the former president was unsealed by special counsel Jack Smith and it’s a damning doozy of an indictment that depicts a man not unaware of what he was doing but as someone who was utterly cognizant of what he was doing and that knew that what he was doing was wrong and went to great lengths to cover it up. This assessment of the charges against this wanna-be Aaron Burr (who was arrested in Alabama in 1807 on charges of treason) are depicted in today’s Atlantic magazine by David A. Graham in an article entitled “The Stupidest Crimes Imaginable.”

The indictment “lays out the federal case against the former president in vivid, shocking, and sometimes even wry detail.” According to what was outlined in the indictment, Dumpf handled the classified material as if they were so much flotsam and jetsam, meaning in a very haphazard and sloppy way, where he stashed documents in a shower, a bedroom, and onstage in a ballroom that frequently held events. This was our president then? Did he know how to keep classified documents away from searching eyes? This indictment clearly shows his total stupidity in handling these classified documents. We learn that Dumpf was personally involved in discussions about the material and directed their repeated relocation. We learn that Dumpf was well aware of both the laws around classified documents and the fact that these particular documents were not declassified. We also learn that Dumpf was personally involved in schemes to hide the documents not only from the federal government, but even from his own attorneys.

In sum, this 37-count indictment depicts a man who knew that what he was doing was wrong and went to extraordinary lengths to cover it up. Dumpf knew exactly how bad it would be if the documents were found and wanted them destroyed or hidden. “His fears, as manifested in his indictment, were well founded.”

Today the unseen special counsel Jack Smith spoke in brief comments at the Department of Justice, where he stated that mishandling of classified information had endangered the nation’s security and the lives of service members and intelligence officers. “Violations of those laws put our country at risk,” Smith intoned.

This defendant now in a federal criminal case has whined that as a former president, he should not be subject to criminal charges. Today Smith debunked that claim by saying “Adherence to the rule of law is a bedrock principle of the Department of Justice.” Continuing, the bearded serious special counsel said, “Our nation’s commitment to the rule of law sets an example for the world. We have one set of laws in this country and thy apply to everyone.” The country and the world were not so sure about this commitment to the rule of law until yesterday.

The indictment includes 37 counts against Dumpf involving seven crimes, including willful retention of national-defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record, corruptly concealing a document or record, concealing a document in a federal investigation, scheme to conceal, and false statements and representations. If convicted, Dumpf could face years in prison.

The clearly worded 49-page indictment claims that Dumpf didn’t just have nonsensitive material in his possession, he stored in his boxes information regarding defense and weapons capabilities of both the United States and foreign countries; U.S. nuclear programs; potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military attack; and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack. The unauthorized disclose of these classified materials could put at risk the national security of the United States, foreign relations, the safety of the U.S. military, and human sources, and the continued viability of sensitive intelligence collection methods.

Smith even establishes that the rogue president was familiar with the rules pertaining to the materials, notwithstanding his supposed ignorance of such rules broadcast on network television and everywhere else. In his comments, Smith quoted repeated statements Dumpf made during the 2016 campaign, in which he was assailing his opponent Hillary Clinton’s handling of classified information, about the importance of such laws.

Though the delusional ex-president still stubbornly clings to the claim that he did nothing wrong because he had declassified the documents he took before he left office, there are two occasions in which Smith debunked that claim in which Dumpf did acknowledge that that was not true.

The most astonishing piece of the indictment was a photo of boxes stacked in a ballroom where prosecutors said events and gatherings took place, and where the boxes remained from January until March 2021, placing classified material quite literally on display at center stage. That means that a valet or anyone else in Mar-a-Lago could have seized and examined these most sensitive documents and could have made copies of these materials.

The special counsel urged during his public announcement today of the indictment that everyone should read the charges against the former president. And I believe everyone should, especially those delusional supporters of this allegedly traitorous former commander in “grief” who played very loosely with this nation’s secrets.

So now Donald J. Dumpf belongs in a very special category: he is the only president to be twice impeached, to be deemed a sexual predator in a civil trial, and is now facing federal criminal charges. Should this person ever get near the Oval Office, let alone Washington, D.C., after this unsealed indictment against him? I would hope that anyone with a sense of patriotism to this country will declare, “Hell, no way!” Would he have the conscience to now drop out of the race, I would think? I’m sure his gargantuan ego would definitely prevent him from doing the right thing.

Even with this airtight case against the demagogue, there is still no universal outrage voiced against him by his cult members, the Republican Party. No one is really coming forward to speak out against the unspeakable acts Dumpf is accused of in this indictment. That fucking weasel Kevin McCarthy had the temerity to even defend him today, which is so disgusting and sadly so predictable.

Anyway, it’s getting late here.

Have a great weekend. The haze in the air should dissipate over the weekend, I hope.

Stay safe and be well.
