Coronavirus Diary

Today is Saturday, June 10, 2023. Now that former president Donald J. Dumpf has been indicted a second time, the buzz is how much time could this moron serve in prison if he is convicted of all 37 counts of the federal indictment handed down to him on June 8. This unlikely scenario takes center stage in a Washington Examiner online article written by Asher Notheis entitled “Donald Trump indicted: How much time in prison could former president serve?”

In the article, it’s posited that Dumpf could be facing a total maximum sentence of 400 years in prison if he is convicted on the 37 charges lodged against him. Here is the breakdown then of the potential years Dumpf could serve in prison if he’s convicted of all of the charges. The 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information are punishable by 10 years each, while the three counts of withholding or concealing documents in a federal investigation are worth 20 years each. On the two counts of false statements, the former president could receive 5 years each, and the count of conspiracy to obstruct justice could tack on an additional 20 years, equaling 400 – 400 – years in jail time, according to the Washington Post. Would you think this jail time is quite excessive here, even in Dumpf’s case? Hell, I would be happy if he serves just five years in jail. He’ll be over 80 – if he doesn’t die in jail – and he would be a former shadow of himself – let’s hope – after he’s released.

The potential prison sentence Dumpf is possibly facing increases exponentially when combined with the 34 felony counts in New York that he faces over hush money payments to Stormy Daniels. These 34 counts, if given the maximum sentence, would land the malignant narcissist with 136 years behind bars, totaling 536 years in jail over the 71 counts.

The maximum jail time could go even higher in the future, as Dumpf still faces the Department of Justice’s investigation into the former president’s conduct surrounding the January 6 riot at the Capitol and an investigation of Dumpf’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia.

Not only should the prospect of facing real jail time worry the ex-president, recent polling now suggests that he is struggling to defeat President Joe Biden in a rematch for 2024. Actually, many voters, it’s been indicated, would consider voting for a third-party candidate. A NewsNation and Decision Desk HQ poll showed that 23.38 percent of voters said they are very likely to consider a third-party candidate if there is a rematch between Biden and Dumpf next year, while 25.67 percent of respondents said they are somewhat likely to consider voting for a third-party candidate. This would probably not be a good sign then for the incumbent president if this were to happen. As of now, there is no one running on a third-party ticket. Is it too early to say that this eventuality could somehow develop if more Americans ignore the leading candidates for the highest office in the land for 2024? We shall see as time wears on.

It’s getting late here. I almost didn’t write a blog since Elliot and I were out the whole day watching our odometer reach over 100,000 miles, as we drove to Princeton, New Jersey, to spend some time at Princeton Record Exchange and to walk around the commercial street there called Nassau Street. We browsed a very well-stocked bookstore on Nassau Street called Labyrinth Books. I resisted the temptation to buy yet another book at this very impressive bookstore. We had breakfast in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, first at the Bay Ridge Diner.

The weather was gorgeous, considering the orange haze that had enveloped the city just a few days ago. People now wore their masks outside more sparingly. The air was clear and crisp.

We returned to Forest Hills around 9 p.m. and I began playing the three CDs I bought at the Record Exchange.

One of the CDs I purchased was actually an early George Carlin comedy album entitled “What am I Doing in New Jersey” and it was recorded in 1988. With his death in 2008, the country has lost a necessary critical voice here in Carlin who was dubbed “the dean of counterculture comedians,” according to his Wikipedia page. If he were alive today, what the hell would he have to say about the political division tearing the country apart now and what would his observations have been on 45. We miss his trenchant wit and omniscience when it comes to his take on the zeitgeist of our dubious times. His still-relevant routines on abortion, the dumbing down of America, religion, and the phoniness behind the “American dream” are still played constantly on TikTok these days. If you can listen to his routines here, I recommend strongly that you do. You will definitely nod your head in agreement over how eerily prescient he was in his jabs at the shibboleths of American culture, say, 20 or even 30 years ago. How relevant his observations then are to today, you will say to yourself. You won’t believe how topical Carlin can still be, even though you might be listening to a monologue recorded 20 years ago.

Anyway, have a nice Sunday.

Stay safe and be well.
