Today is Tuesday, June 13, 2023. Did anyone hear the earth shake when the former president was arraigned and processed at a federal courthouse in Miami today? No, I don’t think so. In my mind, there was no earthquake or even spasms of violence that were predicted to occur by law enforcement authorities last night. Thus the would-be fascist pleaded not guilty to 37 charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. This process was reported on in an online CNN article by Tierney Sneed, Hannah Rabinowitz, Jeremy Herb, Holmes Lybrand, and Katelyn Polantz entitled “Donald Trump leads not guilty to classified documents charges.”
During the arraignment, Dumpf’s attorney Todd Blanche told the judge, “We most certainly enter a plea of not guilty.”
Too bad there were no cameras in the courtroom because Dumpf was seen sitting hunched over with his arms crossed and wearing a scowl on his face. The hearing ended after roughly 45 minutes.
Dumpf’s aide and codefendant, Walt Nauta, was also arrested, fingerprinted, and processed. He was also charged with lying to investigators and scheming with Dumpf to keep the documents at Mar-a-Lago.
Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman ruled that Dumpf could not communicate with Nauta about the case.
The judge did not, however, place any travel restrictions on either defendant.
The Justice Department recommended that both Dumpf and Nauta be released with no financial or special conditions. Prosecutor David Harbach said that “the government does not view either defendant as a flight risk.” Hmmm, wouldn’t it be neat if the former president got scared and flew in the dead of night to Russia to get away from his legal troubles?
Goodman began the hearing thanking “the entire law enforcement community” for their work on Tuesday.
Before the arraignment hearing, deputy marshals booked the former president and took electronic copies of his fingerprints. There was no mugshot, unfortunately, taken of Dumpf since he is easily recognizable! Too bad. The booking process took about 10 minutes.
For those who are interested, special counsel Jack Smith attended Tuesday’s arraignment. I wonder if Dumpf and Smith exchanged scowls!
What could be more Trumplike than this piece of garbage making an unannounced stop at Versailles, a well-known Cuban restaurant in Miami, where the disgraced former president walked through the restaurant like a potentate and shook hands with patrons, as well as posing with pictures with the admiring crowd. Would this crowd still try to get pictures with him once the dirty details emerge from the trial about how their former president threatened the country’s security and even theirs by his wanton disregard of the classified material he took out of the White House?
After being treated like a king in this restaurant, Dumpf flew back to New Jersey where he spoke publicly at his Bedminster resort about what he called the “fake and fabricated charges” and claimed he had “unrestrained authority” when it came to handling the documents. Boy, will this ridiculous assertion be smacked down in the courtroom whenever “the trial of the century”actually begins.
On his social media platform, Dumpf posted the same drivel in capital letters, which I won’t repost here, just that he called today “one of the saddest days in our nation’s history.” It sure was! Not for the fucking reason he thinks. The whole world must be watching with baited breath right now.
The judge who might officiate at this most significant trial is U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, the same judge who bent over backwards last year to give Dumpf what he wanted at the beginning of the documents imbroglio when she ordered a third-party review of an FBI search of Mar-a-Lago that was widely criticized and overturned by a conservative appeals court. This could be a disaster for the proceedings in the courtroom and for the country if this fawning judge does officiate at the trial. She sits in Ft. Pierce, Florida, but she is part of the pool of judges who are randomly assigned to West Palm Beach, where the new indictment was brought.
Commenting on how Cannon could gum up the works, so to speak, a former attorney in the DOJ National Security Devision, who is now a University of Minnesota law school professor, Alan Rozenshtein, said, “She could – if she wanted to – cause huge problems for the prosecution. Would they be existential problems? Probably not.”
Someone else by the name of Kel McClanahan, a national security lawyer and an adjunct professor at the George Washington University Law School, said this about how Cannon might comport herself if she’s assigned the case, “She got so banged up by the 11th Circuit that she might be ultra-cautious.” However, McClanahan added this about how Cannon might pursue the case, “We just don’t know.”
As for the “thousands” of Dumpf supporters expected to rally in front of the courthouse, Queerty has an article that states “Hardly anyone showed up to protest Trump’s arraignment today. . . but Twitter sure had a lot to say about it,” by Alex Reimer. I watched the proceedings this afternoon for a short while and I was struck dumb by the stupid protesters with their Trump flags and their red MAGA hats, but the size of the crowd seemed very measly.
The article states, “Outside of the courthouse, small gaggles of protesters expressed their support for their criminally charged former president, The New York Times reports.”
Then the article quotes Twitter users who had a ball with the supposed size of the demonstration. One of them, Mark Elliott, said that “Miami prepared for 50,000 Trump supporters to demonstrate against his indictment. CNN is reporting 20 have shown up so far. 20.”
One other user, “Maxie Mama,” humorously wrote that “The small amount of protesters at the Trump arrest & arraignment is pretty pathetic. I’ve been to backyard parties with more people in attendance than this pitiful little protest.”
One other user, Elie Mystal, stated that “More people showed up to protest the closing of the Tasty in Harvard Square than have showed up to this Trump arraignment protest.”
Thus it is fair to say that huge crowds did not show up for the Dumpf arraignment. This country is probably more fed up with Dumpf than anything else.
Even his wife, Melania, it was pointed out in the article, failed to show up for her husband’s appearance in court. It was reported that she was somewhere else in the country having her fucking hair done. What does that say about her and her loyalty to her husband during this fraught time here? Not very much, I dare say. I’m certain they haven’t slept together for a very long time. But I don’t really know their marital situation like everyone else. It’s just a guess, that’s all.
Stay safe and be well.
