Today is Thursday, March 7, 2024. Today the President delivered a forceful, sweeping State of the Union speech to the nation. That’s why I’m late here since I watched the entire speech. He went on late, around 9:25 and finished almost 80 minutes later. For me, he showed that he was in command of the situation. For someone who is so old, he still hasn’t left the House floor.
Biden began his fiery speech by referencing a 1941 speech by President Franklin Roosevelt who spoke to the American people about how “freedom and democracy were under assault in the world.” It is Biden who took to the stage tonight to “alert the American people that this is no ordinary moment either.” He went on to say that “Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy been under assault here at home as they are today.” Boy, is that so true.
Then he went on to call out Russian president Vladimir Putin and his war in Ukraine and condemned him for “sowing chaos throughout Europe and beyond.” He noted that Ukraine has the fortitude to beat Russia only “if we stand with Ukraine and provide the weapons it needs to defend itself.” He noted there are no American soldiers at war in Ukraine.
Biden castigated Republicans for blocking aid from going to the war-ravaged country. He also condemned his predecessor – without calling the Orange Hemorrhoid by name – for telling Putin, “Do whatever the hell you want” to another European country that doesn’t support NATO financially. Biden acted totally surprised that “a former American President actually said that, bowing down to a Russian leader.” He then thundered, “It’s outrageous. It’s dangerous. It’s unacceptable.”
The President then challenged his Reputin colleagues to send him the Bipartisan National Security Bill. He reminded everyone in the chamber that “History is watching.”
Another area Biden touched on was the insurrection fomented by his predecessor three years ago, on January 6, 2021, in which “insurrectionists stormed this very Capitol and placed a dagger at the throat of American democracy.” He called these bums out as not patriots but as agents of chaos who wanted to “stop the peaceful transfer of power and to overturn the will of the people.” I believe some repugnicans heckled Biden at this point.
Oh, and the worst member of Congress who displayed her terrible taste in fashion by appearing in a red MAGA hat and matching red jacket was the loathsome Marjorie Taylor Greene. If you ask me, she should have been escorted out of the House chamber for wearing that repugnant hat. She’s a fucking joke!
Biden said something very forceful about the insurrection that should resonate with voters: “You can’t love your country only when you win,” in reference to Herr Drumpf and his MAGA allies.
In his long address, there was a plea to guarantee the rights to IVF nationwide. He called out his predecessor again for overturning Roe v. Wade and championed women for having the power of the vote to make things right by casting out repugnicans who run on the federal and state ballot. He said this while several of the justices of the Supreme Court were seated in the front rows.
Biden also referred to the situation in which the nation found itself when the pandemic struck and we had “a president, my predecessor, who failed the most basic duty. Any President owes the American people the duty to care.”
The speech was punctuated with Democrats spontaneously chanting “four more years” during certain points of Biden’s address. And many shots of republicans stonily sitting in their seats. There were even some clips of House members staring into their cell phones which is a huge mark of disrespect for the president, I dare say.
In the speech, Biden touted his record and the work that still needs to get done in the years ahead. I cannot ever see Drumpf making the same speech, could you?
Contrasting himself from his predecessor, Biden vowed not to demonize immigrants, saying they “poison the blood of our country,” as Drumpf said in his own words. He pledged not to separate families, as Trump has done or ban people from America because of their faith, as the Dump administration did.
Biden also called for the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to be passed by Congress. What I liked is when he said, “stop banning books.” He added, It’s wrong!” He then went to say, “Instead of erasing history, let’s make history,” which is a good tagline from his State of the Union speech.
Towards the end of his fiery speech, Biden even embraced his age, contrasting his vision of America with that of his predecessor who wants to pull this country back to the past. The President stated that “his lifetime has taught him to embrace freedom and democracy.” He again contrasted his style with that of his predecessor’s who sees “an American story of resentment, revenge, and retribution.” He said that person is not him.
He buried the question of age that has dogged him all this time by saying, “My fellow Americans, the issue facing our nation isn’t how old we are, it’s how old our ideas are. Hate, anger, revenge, retribution are among the oldest of ideas. But you can’t lead America with ancient ideas that only take us back. To lead America, the land of possibilities, you need a vision for the future of what America can and should be.”

I failed to watch the Republican response. I knew it would be bullshit all the way.
Stay safe and be well.
