Today is Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Today the Biden campaign brought out all its heavy armaments by having Vice President Kamala Harris travel to red state Florida just hours after a controversial ban on most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy goes into effect in the DeSatan state in which she laid the overturning of women’s reproductive rights directly on the orange head of the former president who is facing a possible conviction in a New York courtroom. This story appears online in a CNN article by MJ Lee, Donald Judd, Ebony Davis, and Michael Williams entitled “Kamala Harris says another Trump term would mean ‘more suffering, less freedom’ as six-week Florida abortion ban goes into effect.”
“Harris, who has been leading the charge for the Biden White House and campaign on the issue of reproductive rights, needled Trump repeatedly during her remarks at a campaign event in Jacksonville, mentioning the former president 21 times and setting into stark terms what a second Trump administration would mean for women across the country: ‘More bans, more suffering, less freedom.'”
The vice president explicitly blamed the Orange Turd for the Supreme court’s historic overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022 and for a slew of abortion bans that some states have adopted since.
According to a Biden campaign official, it was the most times she had mentioned Dump at an event so far this year.
Harris also mentioned how abortion bans like the one going into effect in Florida on Wednesday threaten medical providers with criminal prosecution.
What should strike fear in women’s hearts is what Harris addressed in her blistering comments on Drumpf concerning comments he made in a very recent Time magazine interview in which he expressed his views on what he would do if – God forbid! – he wins the presidency again in November in which he did not object when asked whether he was “comfortable” with states punishing women who undergo abortions where it is banned.
Here the Orange Demon sidestepped bearing responsibility about what might happen when states pass far more restrictive bans on abortion. He concludes, “The states are going to have to be comfortable or uncomfortable, not me.”
In response to those scary comments, Harris said, “So Florida, the contrast in this election could not be more clear: Basically under Donald Trump, it would be fair game for women to be monitored and punished by the government, whereas Joe Biden and I have a different view. We believe the government should never come between a woman,an and her doctor.” So far, 21 repugnican states have restrictive abortion measures on the books.
Highlighting the backward nature of this rollback on women’s reproductive rights, Florida House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell told CNN at the Jacksonville event that women in Florida woke up today with “fewer rights than their mothers and their grandmothers had.” This should truly galvanize women across the state and the nation to reject this kind of extremism only coming from the Reputin side this November.
The vice president’s trek to Florida comes just one week after President Joe Biden visited Tampa – also to shine a spotlight on the state’s six-week abortion ban.
During remarks to supporters on Wednesday, Biden called the Florida abortion ban one of the “most extreme” in the country and squarely pinned the blame on his GOP opponent.
People in the Biden campaign are hoping that this extreme situation concerning abortion will help galvanize voters ahead of Election Day and make Florida – a state that Dump won in 2016 and 2020 – more competitive. In addition to ringing the alarm bell on the six-week abortion ban, Democrats are also seizing on the fact that a constitutional amendment that would codify abortion protections in the state will be on the ballot in the fall, hoping that measure can drive turnout.
While Dump has spent most of his time in a New York courtroom for the last two weeks, Harris and Biden have kept a far busier campaign schedule. In April alone, the vice president made stops in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Los Angeles, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Georgia – all states that may prove crucial to delivering Biden a reelection victory in November.
I like this strategy adopted by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) which launched a sky banner over Dump’s very own Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach that reads: “Trump’s Plan: Ban Abortion, Punish Women.” Too bad Dump himself couldn’t be there to see the banner fly over his compound.
On the other hand, the Arizona Senate today voted to repeal the state’s 160-year-old near-total abortion ban, three weeks after the state Supreme Court stupidly revived the law and thrust reproductive rights into the political spotlight.
This development was reported in an online CNN article by Arit John entitled “Arizona Senate votes to repeal Civil War-era near-total abortion ban.”
Two Republicans – miracles of miracles! – Senators Shawnna Block and T.J. Shope – voted with the chamber’s 14 Democrats to advance the repeal, which passed 16 to 14. A little too close for comfort here.
The vote comes a week after three Republicans joined with all 29 Democrats in the state House to repeal the law, which bans abortion at all stages of pregnancy except to save the life of the mother and threatens abortion providers with two to five-year prison sentences. Isn’t this disgusting, folks? We’re throwing medical practitioners into jail for helping women terminate unwanted pregnancies.
The bill next heads to the desk of Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, who said today that she looks forward “to quickly signing the repeal into law.” The legislation would clear the way for the state’s 15-week limit to remain state law, which was enacted in 2022, and does not include exceptions for rape or incest.
Even after this repeal is enacted, Democrats plan to argue the 15-week limit and its lack of exceptions for rape or incest is still unpopular. At the state legislature-level, they plan to target vulnerable House Republicans over their past antiabortion votes.
The discussion on the Senate floor over repealing this ridiculous, outdated law grew somewhat contentious and at times emotional, as some Reputins blasted the two GOP defectors. Signifying how hidebound these repugnicans are and not in step with the times, those who voted against the repeal invoked their fundamental faith and rejected the idea that they must repeal the territorial ban to win the upcoming election. Ok, fuckers, you lose then!
One state senator, Senator Anthony Kern, one of Arizona’s 2020 election fake electors, said something quite repugnant which is not shocking since he’s a republican. He said self-described “prolife” Republicans who voted to repeal the ban signified the “epitome of delusion” and – it gets better – compared the vote to Nazi Germany sorting Jewish people at death camps. What the fuck! Is this guy for real? Who makes such comparisons?
Things are certainly heating up in this election year, and it’s only May.
Stay safe and be well.
