Coronavirus Diary

Today is Wednesday, June 26, 2024. We are at the eve of tomorrow’s presidential debate between a sitting president and a convicted felon who will know his fate on July 11. The showdown will be hosted by CNN at 9 p.m. Eastern Time in Atlanta and will promise to be a humdinger of a debate that could swing the election either way. But who knows? Everything is so topsy-turvy since Donald Duck became president and tried to overturn a legitimate election in 2020 that the debate might have no effect whatsoever. This is what Dump has done to this country since he made that fateful descent down the escalator in Trump Tower in 2015. Tomorrow’s debate will be moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash for CNN.

As for ascertaining if this debate will be successful or not, an online article in Reason by Eric Boehm posits that a disastrous debate this time could be “the best outcome for America.” The article’s title is “Why a Disastrous Biden-Trump Debate Could Be the Best Outcome for America.”

Citing the last debate that aired in October 2020, The Washington Post called that squaring off between the two candidates “the worst presidential debate in living memory.” If you recall, there was constant interruptions, constant talking over one another, name-calling, and juvenile bickering. as media analyst Tom Jones indicated at Poynter.

One of the few positive reviews came from Reason‘s Jacob Sullum, who argued that the debate was “good for the republic” because it shattered the “unfounded respect for the people who rule us.” If you feel this is a good reason why it was salutary for the country.

The article’s writer argues this time that tomorrow’s debate could be a complete train wreak in that both men will crash and burn up there on that podium. Then they will show that they deserve neither our respect nor our affection from that moment on.

Boehm buys into the public’s perception that Biden is showing signs of declining mental acuity and that voters are skeptical of reelecting a president who will be 82 years old on Inauguration Day. He writes, “What if something happens that’s undeniable, inescapable evidence that Biden’s no longer sharp enough to run the executive branch?”

In my opinion, it’s Trump who should be concerned that he rambles on like some “elderly, intoxicated uncle, consumed by his spiraling legal problems and no longer in possession of the considerable charm and wit that’s always been his best weapon as a politician?” I couldn’t ever say what makes him charming to his loyal stupid base, but that’s just me. Or what he says doesn’t just reek of puerile gibberish.

Basically, the article argues for both candidates to be dropped by their respective parties if they both perform miserably tomorrow night. Boehm writes that the nominees will be decided by the delegates at the Republican and Democratic conventions. “That’s what really matters,” he writes.

“The window between now and the conventions is the last chance for Biden or Trump to be tossed out without triggering other complications,” Boehm writes. But he answers that the chance of the Republican Party doing this to Dump is practically nil. He writes, “His every vice has been retconned into a virtue.” Even Dump’s myriad legal issues seem not to be a problem with his supporters.

The writer of this article believes that Democrats should start trying to convince Biden to step aside for the good of the party and nominate someone else. It’s true that Biden’s approval rating is under 40 percent right now. And Drumpf’s is only slightly better.

In my humble opinion, I believe this writer and so many pundits have underestimated Biden’s performance. I don’t think he will stumble and stammer during this early debate. He showed remarkable stamina for his State of the Union address, delivered in March 2024. So I have hope that Biden will do more of the same tomorrow night.

Again, only time will tell if this debate will go down in the history books as one for the ages. I know that I’ll be watching, even though I might mute Dump every chance I get. If I’m not here, you’ll know why; I was watching the debate.

Stay safe and be well.
