Coronavirus Diary

Today is Tuesday, July 9, 2024. It’s late here because I was out having dinner with two old friends “Ryan” and “Larry.” We met at the Madison Restaurant on First Avenue and 53rd Street. We hadn’t seen each other in a long while, so it was very nice that we could get together and catch up with personal news.

As for the issue of the day, whether we will reinstate a convicted felon in the White House once again after a disastrous first term, his niece has the last word tonight. In an online Raw Story article by Matthew Chapman entitled “Mary Trump: America is in ‘cognitive decline’ if it can’t remember ‘horrors’ of my uncle,” Mary Trump castigates America for its own cognitive decline with regard to the horrors perpetrated on the country when her uncle was in office the first time. Talk about the presidential candidates experiencing cognitive decline: it’s America that is experiencing it right now because voters are actually considering putting a convicted felon back in the White House. What the fuck!

In her latest email blast, Mary Trump slammed the cognitive health of the American people if they are truly considering putting former president Donald Duck back in power. This comes amid ongoing worry among pundits and the Democratic congressional rank and file about President Joe Biden’s health and fitness to campaign against Trump in the 2024 election – a fear that Biden himself sought to put to rest today with a fiery and rousing NATO speech.

Ms. Trump wrote, “The United States of America appears to be experiencing cognitive decline. That’s the only way I can explain the short memories that have erased the horrors of my uncle’s catastrophic four years in the Oval Office. It’s the only way I can explain a poll that shows Donald with a 51 percent approval rating in Wisconsin. It’s the only way I can explain why this race is so close and Donald – the convicted felon and adjudicated rapist and fraud – remains a significant threat to our democracy.”

When her despised uncle left office, she noted, there was an explosion of violent crime, an economic collapse that peaked at 15 percent unemployment, and above all mass deaths from a pandemic that he suggested Americans combat by drinking household cleaners.

“Waxing nostalgic? For a time when over 5,000 Americans were dying every day; basic supplies, like toilet paper and hand sanitizer, were impossible to find; and Donald showed his concern for the American people by playing golf every day? Yes, I’m worried about us,” she wrote.

She added, “Americans have short memories. And after the massive traumas we’ve experienced over the last eight years, it’s completely understandable that people are inclined to forget. That’s how trauma works. The reason things in this country continue to seem bad now despite much evidence to the contrary is because we’ve never recovered from the horrors of the Trump administration. Ironically, forgetting how bad things were is leading to nostalgia for the worst four years of my lifetime.” She concluded, “The fact that it’s explicable doesn’t make it any less horrifying.”

Mary Trump makes a lot of sense here, as she tries to grapple with the collective amnesia that has descended upon a good cross section of the American public as to its perception of the Donald Drumpf years. Let us hope and pray that there’s a greater segment of the public that hasn’t been infected with the forgetting disease with regard to the Orange Turd’s true threat to democracy this November.

Stay safe and be well.
