Coronavirus Diary

Today is Friday, July 19, 2024. Since I didn’t watch the Orange Bloviator’s speech last night, I went to an online CNN article that fact-checked his 92-minute, rambling, absurd speech last night at the Republican National Convention (RNC) which states that Dump made more than 20 false claims in his acceptance speech. The article is written by the CNN staff and it’s entitled “Fact check: Trump makes more than 20 false claims in RNC acceptance speech.”

I won’t list all of the false claims; as everyone knows, the guy lies with every pronouncement he makes, so why go to the trouble of fact checking every false statement when it’s always going to be a lie anyway. But a few are worthy of mentioning here to highlight Dump’s terrible penchant for lying. The staff at CNN cited Drumpf’s speech as the “most dishonest speech” of the four-day RNC.

Many of the lies, CNN mentions, spanned a wide variety of topics, including the economy, immigration, crime, foreign policy, and elections. “Some of them were wild lies, others smaller exaggerations.”

One of those lies was that there was record inflation under President Biden. False! Here are the facts first: Drumpf’s claim is false. The current inflation rate, 3 percent, in June 2024, is nowhere near the all-time record of 23.7 percent, set in 1920.

But Drumpf could fairly say that the inflation rate did hit a 40-year high in June 2022, but it has since plummeted.

On the issue of Medicare and Social Security and their impact on immigration, Drumpf here made a whopper. During his sophomoric speech, Dump again said that Democrats are harming Social Security and Medicare by letting migrants into the country.

The repugnican nominee for president declared that migrants are going onto Social Security and Medicare and are contributing to their destruction. Facts first: Drumpf is wrong. The opposite is true; many undocumented immigrants work, which means they pay much-needed payroll taxes, and this bolsters the Social Security and Medicare trust funds and extends their solvency.

On another matter, Drumpf exaggerates how much higher gas prices are right now. He said that under Biden, “gas prices are up 60 percent.” Facts first: The average price of a regular gallon of gasoline nationwide is $3.51 as of Thursday, according to Automobile Association of America (AAA). That’s up about 47 percent from the day President Joe Biden was inaugurated, when the average was $2.39, not 60 percent higher as Drumpf falsely claimed.

The White House is able to ease upward pressure on prices on occasion since the United States has a strategic gasoline reserve, but gas prices are still mostly determined by market forces, such as global production and consumer demand, not solely by the decisions of a sitting president.

Another bugaboo of Drumpf’s is his wild claim that immigrants are “coming from prisons, they’re coming from jails, they’re coming from mental institutions and insane asylums . . . Terrorists are coming in at numbers we’ve never seen before.” Facts first: There is no evidence for his claim that jails around the world are being emptied out so that prisoners can travel to the United States as migrants, nor for his claim that foreign governments are also emptying out mental health facilities for this purpose. Last year, Drumpf’s campaign was unable to provide any evidence for his narrower claim at the time that South American countries in particular were emptying their mental health facilities to somehow dump patients upon the country.

This egregious lie should make everyone mad. The Orange Turd continues to claim that “our crime rate is going up, while crime statistics all over the world are going down.” Facts first: Drumpf’s claim about a dramatic increase in the crime rate is false. Official data published by the FBI shows violent crime dropped significantly in this country in 2023 and in the first quarter of 2024, though there were some increases in some communities.

Thus here are some of Drumpf’s lies exposed during his rambling acceptance speech last night. There are just too many to write about here. All of these false claims should worry any voter who is still undecided about whom he or she is thinking of voting for in November.

All in all, the speech this convicted felon gave did not become a forum with which to talk about unifying the country. In fact, he did just the opposite. He renewed his thirst for vengeance and grievance. And bombed so monumentally.

Now it should be the Democrats’ place to expose the damage that this convention wrought on the American psyche and do the true unifying: to actually unify the American public against this lying fascist.

It’s another weekend. Thankfully, it won’t be as hot as it has been most recently.

Stay safe and be well.
