And So It Goes

Today is Tuesday, November 12, 2024. The one thing associated with last week’s soul-crushing election results I will report here is the president-elect’s 35 thousandth-lie (or thereabouts) about how he won a “historic mandate” among the American electorate, which has been debunked already by reputable sources, primarily by Lawrence O’Donnell’s The Last Word who called it bullshit on Dump’s egregious assertion. An online article in Media ITE by Tommy Christopher entitled ‘Stop Listening!’ MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell Calls BS On Trump ‘ Landslide’ That Could End Up A 1% Victory” outlines the facts behind this most consequential election and how the winner is bullshitting the American people once more (Ugh! To have to listen this guy for the next four years makes my stomach turn!) and his ignorant supporters will buy it, hook, line and sinker.

But on Monday night’s edition of MSNBC’s The Last Word, O’Donnell explained how narrow the final result could be once all the votes are counted and canceled anyone who would dub it a “landslide.” He mentioned that ballots received in the mail tomorrow will be counted in California. “So there are literally millions of ballots yet to be counted in this country, including in the state of Pennsylvania, where thousands of votes remain to be counted to determine the balance of the United States Senate,” O’Donnell stated. O’Donnell estimated that Republicans will probably have 52 senators next year or 53 if Republicans win the Pennsylvania Senate election. The Democrats will probably have 47 members of the Senate or 48 if Democrat Bob Casey wins the Pennsylvania Senate race, he predicted. The seasoned MSNBC host said it’s still too close to call which party will control the House (I’m praying, praying, this will somehow go to Democrats in order not to have Dump sweep all chambers of Congress). There are 16 remaining seats to be decided.

Thus in the presidential vote, Dump currently has 50.2% of the vote to Kamala Harris who has 48.1% of the vote. O’Donnell predicted that margin will probably narrow after all the California votes are finally counted, and it is possible that Harris will end up with only 1% of the vote less than Donald Trump, a 1% gap. O’Donnell stated, “Right now, she’s at 2% less than Donald Trump.”

Then O’Donnell launched into a factual retrospective of former landslide election victories. He referenced Bill Clinton’s reelection victory in 1996 when he sparred against Senator Bob Dole. There he won with 49.2% of the vote against Bob Dole’s 40.1% of the vote, and Ross Perot’s 8.4% of the vote. Here, Clinton won by nine points, “and no one called that a landslide because it wasn’t,” O’Donnell mentions.

The last landslide this country actually had was Ronald Reagan’s reelection in 1984, where he won 49 states in the Electoral College, with only the state of Minnesota voting for Walter Mondale, who was from Minnesota. This time, Reagan beat Mondale by 18 points. O’Donnell correctly stamps that win as a landslide.

That is the only political news I’ve decided to report on so far. I’ve continued to practice a moratorium on network news, even though I covertly watched Rachel Maddow last night for several minutes. Elliot still hasn’t broken down to watch the news.

One other story I will recount for you is the shocking display of antisemitism that occurred right here in Michigan outside a local theater performance of The Diary of Anne Frank where demonstrators waved Nazi flags outside as performers acted on stage. This incident is reported in an online article by Kathleen Magramo entitled “Demonstrators wave Nazi flags outside local theater performance of ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ in Michigan.”

This appalling incident occurred in Livingston County, Michigan, when several masked men showed up and waved the cursed flags and reportedly shouted antisemitic and racist slurs outside the American Legion Post 141 in Howell on Saturday during the play, according to CNN affiliate WXYZ.

A witness, Army veteran Bobby Brite, stated, “People were shocked. They were appalled,” he told WXYZ. “Everything you would expect.”

Brite said many of the 75 people who watched the play were afraid to leave the building and had to be escorted to their cars. He added, “Nobody in America should feel like that.”

The Fowlerville Community Theatre, which put on the production, said in a statement, the play “centers on real people who lost their lives in the Holocaust,” and added the cast and crew “endeavored to tell their story with as much realism as possible.” The theater group added, “The presence of protesters outside gave us a small glimpse of the fear and uncertainty felt by those in hiding.” The statement goes on to say that it was the theater’s express purpose to help prevent the atrocities of the past from happening again by showing Frank’s story on stage.

Luckily, the demonstrators left after being told to vacate the legion post’s parking lot, but not before engaging in a sharp exchange of words with patrons while across the street.

The county has faced similar displays of racism this year. In July, white supremacists marched through Howell, located roughly 40 miles northwest of Detroit.

We all know that threats to Jews have tripled in the U.S. in the one-year period since the deadly October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. In the weeks following October 7, reports of hate crimes and bias incidents targeting Jews, Muslims, and Arabs all surged across the country.

What is especially horrific about this incident is that patrons watching a play about Anne Frank who hid in an attic in Amsterdam were harassed by antisemites just as the city itself has recently become a hotbed of antisemitism itself, as a statue of Frank in a local park was vandalized with the word “Gaza” scrawled in red paint. More recently, people were beaten and injured in violent clashes between fans of an Israeli soccer team and counterprotestors in the city over the weekend, which Dutch authorities condemned as antisemitic.

And if you think these incidents will decrease over a second Trump term, you are quite deluded. You might recall that during his first disastrous term, incidents of anti-Asian harassment went through the roof resulting from the then-president’s referral to the coronavirus as the “kung flu” or “Chinese virus,”which helped perpetuate a climate of hatred among Asian communities. Of course, this time around, Dump allegedly got more support from the Asian community over Harris. Go figure!

Can’t wait for this shit show to begin once more!

Oh, tomorrow Elliot and I will be meeting my Manhattan cousins to cry over the election results and commiserate together over a bowl of French onion soup, possibly, at AOC East, located on 1st Avenue and 83rd Street. I will probably not post my blog then.

Have a great Wednesday somehow.

And so it went!
