Today is Monday, January 19, 2026. Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and it’s not too fantastic to claim that if the civil rights leader were alive today, he would be appalled at what this current administration is doing to its citizens. And not to just Americans, but what this cruel regime has set its sights on in the broader world context.
In light of the man we remember today in ceremonies throughout the country, the Daily News has an article by Kate Brumback entitled “Daughter of MLK: Day ‘Saving Grace’: Rev. Bernice King urges people to aid in service projects amid ‘very troubling climate right now.'”
One of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s daughters, Bernice King, said the holiday honoring her father’s legacy comes as “somewhat of a saving grace” this year. The reason she said this is because “it inserts a sense of sanity and morality into our very troubling climate right now.” She said this in an interview with the Associated Press and continued, “With everything going on, the one thing that I think Dr. King reminds people of is hope and the ability to challenge injustice and inhumanity.”
MLK Day comes as the Orange Turd is about to mark the first anniversary of his second term in office tomorrow, January 20.
Ms. King enunciated the “three evils” that her father identified in a 1967 speech as threats to a democratic society that “are very present and manifesting through a lot of what’s happening” under Dump’s “leadership.” Those three evils are poverty, racism, and militarism.
The slain civil rights leader’s daughter cited “efforts to roll back diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; directives to scrub key parts of history from government websites; and remove ‘improper ideology’ from Smithsonian museums; and immigration enforcement operations in multiple cities that have turned violent and resulted in the separation of families” as evidence of how Dump is rolling back the clock on hard-fought rights.
Maya Wiley, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, one of the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights coalitions, said King’s words “ring more true today.”
The former candidate for mayor said, “We’re at a period in our history where we literally have a regime actively working to erase the civil rights movement.” She had no good words for this regime, saying, “This has been an administration dismantling intentionally and with ideological fervor every advancement we have made since the Civil War.”
Wiley also recalled that King warned about the prospect of war that could undermine the beloved community and that engaging in wars took away our ability to take care of all of our people. At the time, King was referring then to the divisive Vietnam War that was raging when he was alive.
With this war-loving administration, we have those military strikes on alleged drug smuggling boats that have continued without any abatement. There is also the capture of Venezuela’s president in a surprise raid earlier this month.
King shied away from saying what her father would say about this current political climate if he were still alive, stating that “It’s a different world. But what I can say is his teachings transcend time, and he taught us, I think, the way to address injustice through his nonviolent philosophy and methodology.”
King said that nonviolence should be embraced not just by those who are protesting and fighting against what they believe are injustices, but should also be adopted by immigration agents and other law enforcement officers, meaning Dump’s personal goons, agents of ICE.
To honor her father’s legacy, she urged people to look inward. She believes we spend too much time looking at everybody else and what they are doing and not doing and not enough time reflecting on ourselves.
Bernice King then endorsed participation in service projects to observe the holiday because they foster connection, sensitize people to the struggles of others, and help us to understand each other better.
But she said people should also look at what they can do in the year to come to further her father’s teachings.
In conclusion, she said that “we have the opportunity to use this as a measuring point from year to year in terms of what we’re doing to move our society in a more just, humane, equitable and peaceful way.”
Now that we are going to mark the first year of this idiot’s second term, the surge of enraged Americans against this regime is growing as more and more protests pop up everywhere. Protests against ICE are bringing people out on the streets in major and even rural regions all throughout the country. ICE is now being rejected by many people from building prison camps in their local communities.
To mark tomorrow’s day of infamy, protests are scheduled throughout the fifty states. It’s called “Free America Walkout,” and organizers of it are urging everyone to walk out of schools, work, and even places of commerce at precisely 2. Those who are going to attend these protests are asked to wear red, white, and blue.
I’m happy to report that I will be one of those protesters massing at 2 in front of Trump Tower tomorrow at 2. I was going to do something in Bryant Park, but it was first called for 4, and I thought that was too late. This protest at the real estate mogul’s building is only supposed to last an hour and tomorrow is expected to be cold, so an hour is good enough for me.
I’m almost positive that Dr. King would be appalled at the imperialistic impulses of this rotten president. We are alienating former allies and are now hated by most everyone else abroad. Boy, what did we do in just a year?
And so it went!
